Restaurant phobia.....

Everytime a friend or family member asks me to go to a restaurant with them, I don't want to go. I know that theres not going to be much that I can eat in a restaurant and I would much rather make my own food at home. The problem is that before I became a vegetarian ( I lean more towards being a vegan now, as I can't have dairy and very rarly have eggs) I use to eat out with friends and family almost every day. I think they want the old me back, but I do't want to ever go back to  my old way of eating ( just the thought of it makes me sick). I also don't want to lose the people that are in my life, but I know they are all getting frustrated with me. Any advice? What do you guys do in situations like this?

I just got my response from Olive Garden, basically saying the same items I mentioned are vegan, but adding that they will be changing the website info in January to reflect the email:

Thank you for your suggestion to add the information below to our website. In January we will be updating the nutritional section of our website. At this time Olive Garden suggests the following items as vegan, meaning they contain no animal-derived ingredients including meat, dairy, eggs, or honey:

Minestrone Soup
Garden Salad with oil and vinegar (instead of our house dressing) and no croutons
Tomato Sauce
Capellini Pomodoro
Steamed Veggies without seasoned butter

so after years and years of putting eggs in their pasta, they suddenly have stopped?  i'm not sure i believe it.

as for eating out, i hate it now.  i used to eat out all the time before becoming vegan, but it's such a hassle where i live to get anything remotely vegan-looking (whether it is or not...who knows) that i mostly don't bother.  if i do eat out, it's lunch and i get veggie sandwiches or falefel (microwaved) from pita pit.  sometimes i order a pizza with no cheese if the dough doesn't have honey in it.  still, the last time i did this, there was a piece of ham on one slice.  if i don't make it myself, i have no way of knowing it's actually vegan, and this bothers the hell out of me.  so.  why bother?

invite people over and make them food.  there's still the food + friends element and no one has to worry about anything.

wtf, why is it acting like i'm writing this inside a quote.  the html quote stuff isn't down here...  dumb dumb dumb.

hey AP!  i was just wondering where youve been!

i feel the same way about the egg noodles at olive garden, but i suppose if theyre really changing their site to reflect that and willing to tell people with egg allergies that they are safe i'll believe it.  honestly most dry pasta doesnt have eggs in it from what ive seen at the grocery store so it seems like a pretty realistic change.

I know I went to a restaraunt long ago, and the waitress sympathized with me, and let me in on the secret that the dressing contained cheese in it.
I know that Cracker Barrel puts animal fat in 99% of their food.
AND, I know that Vinny T's puts butter in every sauce that they have.

You can't be overly sweet, or some waiters and waitresses will lie to you, and walk over to you.
And, you can't be too bitchy, or some people will purposefully fix items.
It's easier to go out with your family, order a salad with oil and vinegar on the side. Then, when you're home, make something.

Thank you for the kind comments! I can only hope to be helpful since that's basically why I made the site. If anyone ever has questions or suggestions I'd always like to hear them because though I may not be able to please everyone I want to try to do the best I can. I try to be as accurate as I can and when anyone points out something might not be right I do my best to get an answer and in the meantime if it's questionable take the item(s) off my site.

I'd just like to add that I take garlic powder with me to restaurants when dining with my family. Routinely.

I've thought about doing that, but never actually have. I'll have to do that next time XD AND EGG ALLERGIES. wait. can you be allergic to eggs? lol

My nephew is allergic to eggs. Before I got into the vegan lifestyle, I found out his mom made him egg/milk free cookies (This was waaaay back in the day, like, Jr. High). I was surprised to learn that cookies could be made without them.  ;D
