Panera Bread

Panera Bread has new really yummy salad that seems vegan (except maybe refined sugar in the dressing) It's called strawberry poppyseed. Does anyone know which if any of their breads are vegan? I like the multigrain one.

Ah, I haven't been to Panera in so long!  I know they have ingredient lists on their website.

That salad sounds great.

I had never heard of it...of course until I just read what you wrote..

The website gives nutrition info, but not ingredients. I did just notice the multi grain bread is honey sweetened. I suppose I should stick to the French bagette from now on. http://www.panerabread.com/menu/ Other things I've eaten there are the black bean soup, garden vegetable soup, & the classic salad.

Heres the discription of the new salad: Crisp romaine lettuce, fresh strawberries, blueberries, pineapple tidbits, Mandarin oranges, pecans and our fat-free Poppyseed dressing.  ;)b

they  have books at the store with all ingredient information (at least the ALB one does) that they can look things up in (does that soup have dairy in it?).

they almost always have a vegan soup here (usually blackbean). its alright.

I KNOW I've looked up the ingredients before.  One time I was going out to eat there and I purposefully looked things up online ahead of time.  Let me investigate a little.

I hate searching for the ingredients on restaurant websites.  It's like they make it as difficult as possible.

I went there and looked, just because you were so excited about it...and I think I'll list all vegan things..b/c...I want to (I'll try not to miss anything!):

VEGAN (double check if you want to be double sure)

1. pastries and sweets: nothing

2. freshly baked breads: country artisan, stone milled rye artisan, plain focaccia has some questionable ingredients, artisan French, artisan sesame semolina (all of them-miche and loaf), artisan three seed demi, artisan ciabatta has questionable ingredients, specialty sourdough, and
DON'T GET the specialty French breads (including baguette)-egg whites!

3. bagels and spreads: blueberry bagel is questionable, everything bagel is questionable, plain bagel questionable, sesame bagel questionable (all of these have glycerides and L-cysteine)

4. breakfast sandwiches and souffles (duh): nothing

5. hand tossed salads: fresh fruit cup, strawberry poppyseed salad without chicken (I don't know what some of the preservatives are, but looks ok)

the classic cafe salad's balsamic vinaigrette has egg yolks! ??? see edit

6. sandwiches: nothing

the Mediterranean veggie sandwich bread has honey and the sandwich has feta crumbles

7. drinks: lemonade (except for the sugar thing), green tea

8. soups: vegetarian garden vegetable soup, vegetarian black bean-natural flavorings

9. kids: nothing

eta (4/09)-

10. Granola parfaits-none

I don't see the strawberry poppyseed salad anymore, and I don't see egg yolks in the classic salad balsamic vinaigrette

I guess b/c they wanted it to be "creamier?" I dunno! It doesn't seem very vegan friendly!

I hate to say it, but I've almost given up on eating out because it's annoying to look up ingredients for every single thing or ask a million and one questions.  I think I get enough label reading in at the grocery store!  I don't live in a vegan friendly place, and so many people here don't even know what the word means!  I do have Panera, so maybe I'll give that strawberry salad a try...

I agree (+ I love to cook, anyway). We don't really eat out. Although Missoula isn't very vegan friendly...I do think people are a lot more conscious about related issues here...and would probably understand the word, vegan.

Also..it wasn't very appetizing to me....looking at all those ingredients/preservatives/chemicals/additives...on the ingredient lists (my opinion, though).

Yeah.  DH and I almost stopped at one on our way back from Columbus.  Instead we ate sunspire malt-sweetened chips out of the bag for dinner. I'm happy with my decision.  ::)

It isn't.  I enjoyed panera quite a lot as a vegetarian, but it's in no way vegan friendly.  They just have delicious bread and bagels and a nice atmosphere.  Great coffee as well.  But like, I wouldn't go there just for the heck of it, probably, unless I was accompanying a friend.

egg is used as an emulsification tool in dressings, particularly vinaigrettes, to prevent the other ingredients from separating (hence it in mayonnaise)....although for vinaigrettes, you can also use mustard....though it doesn't work quite as well/long to keep the water/oil/vinegar happily together!!

It just so happens that my omni hubby wanted to eat at a Panera for lunch yesterday.  I asked the cashier if they had any bread that was vegan, and she was like, "maybe one or two things".  She pulled out a huge binder and started looking through it checking ingredients.  While I commend the effort, I stuck with my trail mix, banana, and soy latte!!

Hehe, look - I'm using it this time!!  I have to go this weekend with some friends and perhaps I'll get some bread...although the preservatives might scare me off!  I'm trying to show them that I can eat at "normal" places, so I'll probably tough it out  :)

You can view the nutritional info online, but watch out, because a few of their dressings have MSG in them
