It's Only Natural restaurant - love at first bite!!

For my hubby's 30th birthday last night, we went out to dinner at It's Only Natural restaurant in Middletown, CT. It's about an hour and 15 minute drive from our home, but we WILL be going here often! OMG I had probably the best dining experience since I became vegan. It was amazing. I had tempeh "crab" cakes with vegan tartar sauce, THE best sweet potato fries I've ever had, and a side of amazing sauteed kale with garlic. For dessert, we had carrot cake and banana cake and ate half of each. This place was amazing - for the first time since I became vegan, I actually went to a restaurant and had trouble deciding what to get! Normally I have to settle for whatever I can get! My hubby ordered the ION special, which was a sampler plate with a couple of tempeh crab cakes, spicy cajun tempeh cutlet, and some pierogies with apple butter. I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!! Seriously, New Englanders, if you are within a reasonable driving distance of this restaurant, you MUST GO!!!  ;D

My hubby said it was worth it to see a smile on my face - he said it makes him sad when I get stressed out about eating out anywhere else - which is why we never do!

yumm, that looks like a great place! i love that they clearly label their menu. i've only eaten at one all veggie place before and i love having options when it comes to ordering instead of the normal... "uhh, should i have (all accidently vegan) soup, salad, or veggie pasta?

Hmm...I am going to be in Rhode Island for about a month (that's where I'm from) and I checked- it's about 2 hours away from my mom's house.  Maybe I can con one of my friends into going with me...though I doubt it...don't have many friends who would drive 2 hours for a vegan restaurant!  ;D

if i was your real life friend i totally would.... but i know that feeling... they just don't want to put in the effort for us to get our vegan eats! i've been telling my friend in seattle i want to go to mighty-o dounuts for the last 2 years and each time i'm out there we never make it for some lame reason or another.

You could always go to Garden Grille, or Crazy Burger in Narragansett - I just got back from there (my parents wanted to take my hubby out for his b-day) and I had an awesome vegan burger - the Birdie Mae burger, which was grilled tempeh, black rice, and some other stuff in a grilled tomato tortilla. They have several vegan burgers, plus they had a couple of vegan specials (vegan gnocchi, enchiladas) and a couple of vegan desserts (vegan cookie split, vegan carrot cake) PLUS they have meat burgers and chicken so you can make omnis happy, too! I'd never been there before but it was great, and cheap!

The restaurant sounds super. I wish there were vegan restaurants on Long Island.

I used to live right down the street from Crazy Burger- I went there all the time!  I love their homemade ketchup!  And the Garden Grille is another staple.  I thought it would be cool to try something different!  ;)

I loved their homemade ketchup, too! It was awesome - it reminded me of curry ketchup I used to get in Germany with my currywurst (in my meat-eating days)!

OMG! I went here for a treat when we were near the beach and i had the vegetable fried rice. It was good and it wasn't as nerve racking as a normal restaurant. There aren't a lot of gluten free options though :( . My mom had a really good carrot miso spread (bread wasn't gluten free) and I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how to make it???

i went to a gourment vegan restaurant called Greens in San Fransisco over the summer.

I've been meaning to check that place out. I live 15 minutes away from it and I actually work in Middletown.

Question: how did you wind up being a Yankee fan living in Rhode Island? Here in CT we're about 50/50 Red Sox/ Yankees (I'm a lifelong Sox fan). I thought everyone in RI was a Sox fan too.

It's kind of funny actually....I have an older brother. We were (and still are) EXTREMELY competitive with each other. Always trying to one-up each other. So when he was about 8 (I was 5 or so)  he was really into the Red Sox. So I decided to get his goat and cheer for the Yankees  ;D The funny thing is, I became a seriously die-hard Yankees fan! I started off just trying to pi$$ him off but I've been a fan ever since. I don't get to watch many games (I don't have cable) so I listen to them on the radio every night. I FINALLY got to go to my first game at Yankees Stadium this year, and it was AWESOME!!! I've seen the Sox-Yanks play at Fenway but I hated it because I couldn't cheer for my team without putting my life in danger.

Anyhoo...sorry to go off on a tangent, I just love to talk about the Yanks!!  :D

Oh, sorry, to answer the other part of your question...there are a good number of Yankees fans in RI. RI has a fairly large Italian-American community, many of whom are Yankees fans (not sure why? Maybe because of players like DiMaggio?? I've always wondered, myself!)

Around here Red Sox and Yankee fans are constantly antagonizing each other. Here are my two favorite jabs:

As a Red Sox fan whenever I hear the number .406 I think of Ted William's batting average. I've always wondered if when Yankee fans hear that number they think of Mickey Mantle's blood alcohol level?

What do Yankee fans use for birth control? Their personalities.

This worked for a while last year when he was in a fielding slump: What do A-Rod and Michael Jackson have in common? They both wear a glove for no apparent reason.

"Yeah? What have they done lately?"   8)

True dat. I can't argue with that one  ;D All kidding aside - I respect Sox fans who respect Yankees fans, and vice versa. I can joke around with it's in good fun but I don't like people who are obnoxious about it - from either side. Know what I mean? And you know how heated Sox-Yanks debates can get!

It's all good natured fun for me. It's only a game, after all!
