I got back yesterday from a week in Cuba (stayed in a resort near Guardalavaca). It was awesome, but SO DIFFICULT to be vegan! I was surprised, especially since it was a 4 star place. I suppose they try to cater to the usual diets of North Americans/Europeans at resorts, but it was weird, even most of the salads had meat in them. Innocent bean and vegetable dishes were tainted with cheese and meat. So, I basically lived off fruit, bread and the occasional vegetable dish. Good thing I brought some Luna bars.

Anyway, for future ref, if people are traveling to Cuba (or any other resort-type place where the availability of vegan food might be questionable):

- bring soymilk/almond milk/whatever milk you drink. There was nothing but cows' milk.
- bring a reusable container to the buffets - if they have something good one day (like a chick pea salad sans meat) load up your container because chances are it won't be a regular item at the counter
- bring nuts/protein bars/whatever in case plant-based proteins are scarce. Enough for your whole stay would be wise.
- if possible get in touch with the hotel staff in advance to let them know about your diet - trying to explain veganism to people in their second or third language can be frustrating for everyone (although all the staff were very helpful and friendly)
- if you meet someone Cuban and get invited to their house, GO! Preferably with some toiletries and what have you, to give them. Cuban folks rarely eat meat themselves, & usually have bean & rice dishes, so that might be the best food you have the whole time.

But, despite the very limited food selection, it was a sweet trip and alot of the food I could eat was pretty good. *runs off to make chili*
