You are here

Hello from Russia! (Not strictly veg-related!)

Hey everybody!

I know I've been really lazy about being on here, but I finally managed to get some spare time on the Internet so I can say hello to you all from my year abroad (if anyone even remembers me after my two-month absence!). So, all appears to be going well, mostly I remember enough Russian to get by and my hostess is lovely.

Unfortunately Russian perceptions of vegetarians are... well... here's a usual conversation in a restaurant:

"Do you have any dishes without meat?"
"We've got fish."

My hostess totally understands the concept of vegetarianism which is miraculous, but unfortunately non-meat protein doesn't exist for her so I've basically been surviving on bread, fruit and vegetables and pasta. Most of this fried. Okay. I'm off to Moscow on Monday for a five day holiday and I've found the details of three vegetarian restaurants - can't wait!

Anyway, complaints about fried pasta aside, everything is going swimmingly and I wanted to share a few pictures of beautiful Yaroslavl to make up for my absence.

Pretty, pretty place :)

Anyone hankering for more can go to my travel journal (shameless self-promotion, I know!) at http://k-is-for-koshka.livejournal.com.

Hope you guys are all doing fine, any interesting news that I've missed? Missing my constant VegWeb lurking!

Wow, that looks amazing!
I know what you mean about other perceptions of vegetarian/ veganism. Once when I was in the Netherlands, I explained to a relative that I do not eat meat. She scooped the meatballs out of my soup and thought that was OK!!

those pics are beautiful!  i've always wanted to go to russia too~ they have an amazing history, and i'm such a huge fan of a few of their authors.  doesn't surprise me they're not that familiar with veganism though, which is part of the reason i've never considered it too seriously.  catski- you must prepare the way!
congratulations, too, on your year abroad.  that's a great opportunity and sounds exciting.  i hope you can find food!!

I'm spending my whole third year of university out here as I'm studying the language, and it's actually a course requirement that I do so - not so much of a leap as a push, really!
