Favourite 'only in America' foods

I just had a brainwave *ouch* last night that I have a good friend due to return to New Zealand from the States in two weeks time.  I'm constantly seeing/hearing about all these specialty products/ cooking/baking supplies that you all have available over there, and thought I could put in a request for her to pick up something awesome for me.

But I've got a complete mind blank as to what kinds of things you can get there that we can't get here...

Any ideas from anyone living on the other side of the world?

buuut the yeast we get looks like this:

which, I gather, is different to in the US. Is that what yours is like, Shell?

oww, you probably can't make boiled peanuts because you have to have RAW peanuts to start and they don't sell those, like, anywhere except for the south. i can't make boiled peanuts in california (hence, dustin's grandma sending us bagged ones) :(.

I was thinking boiled peanuts. But the kinds in cans that you can buy at stores arent the best.

yes. you should just get them to buy you some in a bag. dustin's grandma sent us some bagged boiled peanuts and they aren't as amazing as fresh but still great.

I think you can find them as bird food. Not sure about the quality, though.

yup, tasty tasty wood sticks. : )
I've never seen it in a box/tin though, it's possible we have it available like that, but I don't think so.  It's fine though, pretty easy to flake up into small pieces by hand, I also sometimes use my trusty ex-coffee grinder to smash them to hell to end up with more of a powder.

Yeah, I can only find it in a tin.  I wish I could buy it loose - I'm sure it would be cheaper, less packaging and easier for me to store in my cupboard.

Anyway, back to the original topic........

Whoah. oww, is that seriously your yeast? That looks like wood or trees. Thats crazy-ayyy!
And yes, you'd have to find green peanuts. Theres this brand of already boiled peanuts i get in stores and they're veryyy yummy. But have to be refrigerated. Downer.
Hmm

Sour patch kids candy?
Do you have oreos? (i seriously have no idea of what is here and not there)

I know NZ doesn't have spaghetti squash, and it's perfect winter squash season here. Unfortunately customs doesn't look too kindly on produce entering new countries. :(

..plus I think it would be kind of funny to see the squash, like, in one's luggage B)

haha, well, it's actually heli's yeast, I stole the photo from her facebook because I don't have a photo of any, but that is exactly what the stuff I buy looks like.

Caroleena, you're right, our customs are extremely strict on produce/food in general, but so long as you declare and it's packaged, you're usually ok.

I'm sure there's a truckload of 'candy' that we don't get here, but I'm not all that sold on sugary treats, I'd prefer home baking any day.

I think things I can use in cooking/baking are definitely in the running, and so far it's liquid smoke and agave nectar.

Umm... Do you have nutritional yeast?  And Ener-Egg-Replacer??

Lauren, check the last page for pictures of funky New Zealand nutritional yeast : )

I don't know whether it's ener-g but there is a commercial boxed egg replacer we can buy, but I prefer to use flax/banana/tofu/whatever because it seems really expensive.  It's probably not really, when you think how many 'servings' there are in a box... but anyway, got 'eggs' covered : )

so out of curiosity, approx how much does agave nectar cost in your stores?

I've found somewhere I can buy it online here that is $36.95/ US$27.35 for two 685g/ 24oz bottles.  Is that average or crazy expensive?

also, I found a place I can order liquid smoke for $7.50/ US$5.55 for 30ml/ 1oz but it's another $7.50 for delivery.

Agave is cheaper here for sure. I have a 11.75oz/0.333g bottle that i bought for $4.19 US.
And i believe liquid smoke is also cheaper here.

What about Worcestershire sauce? I feel like you would have that, but i saw it next to my liquid smoke when looking for a price and thought of it.

Sarah, we have worcestershire sauce, some vegan brands and some with unnecessary poor dead fishies in :' (

I put in my request for some agave and/or liquid smoke today, she's packing up from Portland to head to LA on Monday and flying out from LAX on Friday...  exciting...!  : )

I may be a bit late, but I have seen agave nectar in health food stores I'm pretty certain.

And we can get the crazy flaky BRIGHT YELLOW nutritional yeast here, but only in special special health food stores and it's crazy expensive. Which is sad because I think I like the taste better. But our barky stuff is still awesome :)

I'm perfectly happy with bark yeast : )

How much was the agave you saw in a health store? If she doesn't end up picking up any I might have to grab some to try, but I suspect it won't become a cupboard staple as most stuff at the health stores I have been to is maaaad pricey!

I honestly can't remember...but it was probably expensive. I always want to buy everything in  those shops and never can :(
