Chicago Diner
So the wife and I made our first trip to the Chicago Diner yesterday and it was great, I mean really, really great! It is a nice to be able to look at a menu and not be restricted to only one choice (that you probably have to alter to make it veg*n). After Meggs recommendation I got the Ruben and sweet potato fries, both were great the sandwich especially. My wife got the Chickin Parmesan with the mac and cheez, she loved her sandwich but was not a big fan of the side, so I ate it. I was never a big mac and cheese fan in the past but the vegan one was OK. The whole menu looked so fantastic and next time I will get something different for sure, the Dagwood sounds great. SO I have found my resteraunt of choice when I go to the city, now if they open one in the 'burbs that would be great. So if your ever in the city of Chiago I recommend you take the red line up to Addison (Cubs stop) and then make the walk to the Chicago Diner, you will not be disappointed!
On a side note we also went to see Dirty Dancing in the Cadillac Theater, now back in 1987 when the film was realeased I was more interested in other less wholesome activities than going to watch a dancing movie so I had never seen the film before I saw the show. However my wife said it is exactly like the movie, which I am not sure how well the show will do because of this, but I enjoyed the show. The main leads were good dancers but never sang, the male lead's acting was a little suspect to be honest, but all in all the show was enjoyable. Not quite the spectacle that Wicked is but still an enjoyable experience.
You can also take the Red, Brown, or Purple lines to the Belmont stop, I believe, but it might be more of a hike (again, I am a newcomer when it comes to the transportation system of the city!)
I'm glad you enjoyed the Reuben! It really is tasty. Did I forget to warn you of the Mac and Cheez? Meh- it's certainly not one of my favorites.

You might want to see Jersey Boys if it's still in town- heard it's better?
My Whole Foods gets slices of their cake in--they are $5 a piece--but beyond worth it!! I really want to go down sometime to eat there--I've figured out that I can take the mega bus there and back in one day--but it would cost around $150 to do the trip and have dinner...kinda a lot for one vegan meal..but I bet it would be worth it *lol*

Hmmmmm... $150? Not so much. Does your WF get the scones? They're soooo good. They don't sell the scones at the Diner, strangely enough, but only at the WF's.
Been looking at the Chicago Diner menu online and oh my does everything look good! They even have recipes posted...one for their gravy. So Meg is the gravy worth making.....I suspect you probally have tried theirs.

I have not had the gravy! I'm willing to be that propinecone has had it, though. Hmmm wait- I think I have had it on the mashed potatoes... but that was a while ago. I'd to with whatever PPC has to say about it.
The food isn't really too terribly expensive, either. It's all the extras like the yummy shakes and desserts and such that probably jacks up the bill a little, but the meals are typically around $10 and quite filling.

I came out $50 lighter than I went in after 2 main meals with one side, a small pitcher of margaritas and a heavy tip, which I think is reasonable. The meals were filing and I was stuffed. I would have liked to try an appetizer and a sweet but I would have had to bag some of my main to do that and as I was walking and taking public transport I didn't fancy it.

It's pretty awesome to go with a group and get a couple appetizers and share them and such, but the main meals are large and like you said, if you have to take things home (like to the 'burbs), it's hard and/or inconvenient to do. I love how friendly and attentive the staff is, as well; but not overbearing/intrusive/annoying.

I plan on going with PPC and 'Cakes! in January. My brother raves about it, as does another friend of mine, and PPC, and now C_W, so I can't wait!

I've only been there once....but I recall being AMAZED by their menu; there's so much to choose from!
I had some Mediterranean (I think) seitan sandwich with spicy fries and ginger tea..that was my first exposure to seitan, and the entire meal was fanTAStic.

*sigh* I am uber poor--so $150 is a lot of money to me...especially for esentially 1 meal. Anywho--I guess I can be happy with the slices of cake for now till i win the lottery!! I think we do have the scones at our WF's--but I'm not much of a scone person so...but OMG--have you had their chocolate mousse cake *drool* that is my favorite--they also sometimes get in seasonal flavors like raspberry and lemmon or pumpkin! Man...I totally want a slice right now...

I feel like I finally "detoxed" from them, though... don't know if I want to get back on that right now!

i've had their gravy but i don't remember it blowing me away.. but it's been a few months. i agree about the mac & cheese though. my dinnery favorite has been the seitan po'boy with the au jus sauce.. it's soooooooo hard to not get it! i had blueberry cream cheese french toast there once too that was a special and omg..
capture! the megabus is NOT that expensive! ive been taking it for about a year now and depending on how early you plan your trip you can get tickets for ungodly cheap. i bought my holiday travel tickets back in october and my tgiving round trip was 9 bucks! and my xmas trip is 2 bucks roundtrip! you couldnt drive across town for that cheap - i heart the megabus

That's how I thought I remembered it, as well. Nothing crazy special about it, but hey, it's vegan gravy, so that's cool.

I braved the cold yesterday and went WF in Wheaton (it's the closest to me in GE but I am not sure if you have a closer one in Geneva?) also. It was not a busy as I thought it would be and picked up my organic veg and tofurkey for my Xmas dinner. We also picked up a Chicago Diner sweet also but I am wiling to bet that little baby is not going to survive until Xmas Day!

No, Wheaton is closest one to me- 30 to 40 mins away depending on traffic and how fast I am able to drive. I think I'll try to make it out there either today or tomorrow. Their scone selection is seasonal, which I am not a huge fan of, because currently it's like, a chai one and some other strange flavor- I mean, the chai sounds good in theory, but it doesn't look hugely appetizing. I hope they have the "turkey" cutlets in the deli section. Mmmmm...
Oh, and you're right, it probably won't make it to Christmas, but the good news is, you live close enough that you can pick up another- I think they're open for a few hours on Christmas Eve Day. ;)
