Asheville, NC

Greetings to all from sunny and beautiful Asheville, North Carolina!  I am here on vacation, and to check out the area since this is where I am planning to move next year when I graduate.  So, I am wondering if those of you that live here can tell me some things that I "must do" while I am in town to get the "Asheville experience."  So far I have been downtown exploring every night and also hiking at Chimney rock and Craggy Pinacle.  Any recommendations as to what else I should do or where/what to eat?  I have been to Laughing Seed (AWESOME), Rosetta's Kitchen (better for lunch than dinner), and Tupelo Honey (not much for the vegan).  I would appreciate some input for those who live here.  Help me out guys!  8)

We don't live in Asheville, but bookpapa and I will go there just to go to Malaprops bookstore. It's a funky independent with a coffee shop attached.

I've heard so much about Asheville that I'm quite curious.  I'm always on about Arcata on California's North Coast.  It's a small town and the whole place is hippy.  I've looked at a couple of pictures of Asheville online and it looks like it's a normal down with a hippy section.  How would you describe the Asheville?  Is the whole town hippy?  Just sections?  Any other insights?  My curious mind wants to know.  :)

Awesome Kendrakat, I'm planning a move to Asheville as well! We'll be heading there yearly next year, Feb-March I guess. Def check out the French Broad Food co-op & there HUGE vegan choco chip cookies :D
They have a splendid selection of natural foods & are perpetually helpful. Nearby is a cool coffehouse, The Dripolator, which usually keeps freshly baked vegan  goodies on hand. The Early Girl Eatery is near Laughing Seed & they have a nice selection of vegan brunch/lunch items & they let you color on the tablecloths!!

Ya.  You know.  That thing that comes after you finish your thesis.  :D  ;)

I can't have anyone challenging my total number of years in school (10).

I wish.  That bad boy total is just undergraduate work.

I have three bachelor degrees.  I was going to do documentary filmmaking, so I got a mass communications degree.  Then I thought an anthropology degree would help my process.  THEN I decided I'd rather be a biologist.

I would love to get a soil science masters, but by now I know so much about my specific field that I give presentations to my professional community about stuff grad students would be learning - so it's almost a "moo point" (nod to Joey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLwYpSCrlHU).
