Asheville, NC

I just have to rub it in that I'm in Asheville again this year for vacation.  This year I'm up on a mountain overlooking the city.  I posted last year about how I think this is the most vegetarian friendly place I've been, especially in the south.

I had a great Korean tempeh dish with kale and brown rice at one of the vegetarian restaurants here.  I had organic coffee a coffee shop that had vegan cookies.  The health food store has a deli to die for!  Every restaurant has vegetarian options.

So I'm in Asheville, eating well and relaxing and you're not...neener neener neener!

Glad you liked Laughing Seed, Tweety! If you go back, try the Harmony Bowl and get the sea vegetable salad on top of it. It was only $11 and delicious, not to mention you get a lot - I got two meals out of that.

I wish it were a franchise so there could be one near me! The closest all-veg restaraunt in my area is top-shelf but very pricey. We go on my birthday.

I had something similar to the Harmony Bowl at Rositta's yesterday, but that did indeed look good.  I could have gotten two meals out of what I bought tonight but was a little piglet and I'm miserably full now.  But it feels good because it was good veg*n food and not like I used to feel after a meat eating fest at some buffet.  :)

Thanks for all that info Nutdragon.  8)

I guess I am concerned that Asheville in time will become overcrowded since it is so popular.  It was already a little bigger than I expected when I visited it.  In my mind I pictured it kind of like a city I visited in Germany where people rode their bikes everywhere and there were significantly fewer cars, lol...  Then I woke up and realized I was still in America and cars are never going to go away...  :-\

I am definitely going to visit Asheville again before I move but still feel that I should "look" at other places...  I have to say that wherever I move is going to have to be in the mountains...  After discovering hiking in the Appalachians I never want to live anyplace flat again!

I was just thinking about that drum circle party that happens downtown on Friday nights...  Do you ever go down there?  I thought it was so cool when I saw that!  If and when I move there - I am going to buy a bongo so I can join in!  ;D

You're welcome!

Asheville will become over-crowded, so will anywhere that is thriving.  I still rant and kick dust around about the fact that they are building Asheville's 4th Walmart just one exit from me. I grew up in Atlanta and I've lived in sprawl...ugly scarring sprawl...and how do you get away from it without contributing to it?  I think of how my grandparents must have felt watching Atlanta grow.  I hope we control Asheville so that it stays beautiful as it grows.  It is nice to have all of the federally protected land around; a lot of what makes Asheville a magical place is not going to ever be developed.

We were marveling about how lucky we were yesterday when we walked down to a city park and it connected with the forestry trail that ran along a large creek with waterfalls and lots of places for the dogs to swim.  There are places like that hidden everywhere in town.

Hahaha, lots of fun!  We can't go down there when we have Raika with us; she HATES drums.  It's great because you can hear that sound all through town.  There's also a group of fire dancers that joins in some nights (don't know if you caught them).  They also do movies in the park some nights and they'll pull in a band and show really old silent movies.  Its fun because you can find a spot up on the rocks and stay for a while.

Good luck in where ever you end up!

:D We are applying for jobs in Asheville! We wanted to move to Eugene, but my MIL got us looking at Asheville (so that we would be close to home). I've gotten resumes ready today. I've been looking at houses too. Does anybody know anything about the different areas?

Hey hoopy!
I moved here 1.5 years ago and loved it! I tried to PM you but something seems wrong with the system. See if you can PM me and we can talk about asheville!

You could be my neighbor! The house across the street is for sale  ;)

Depending on the type of nurse that you are, you may find this interesting: mom tells me that in the ER here there are dramatically fewer shootings than in any town she's ever worked in, but more stabbings.  Anyway, if you've developed your nurse's macabre sense of humor, that may mean something to you.

I've always thought people who stab others are more disturbed than the violent angry people who shoot people.  That would make me not want to live in Asheville proper, unless most of the activity happens in a downtown area - and then just not there.

Oh man now I have the worst craving ever for The Laughing Seed. I had a sandwich there last time that was so big I couldn't fit the whole thing in my mouth. And I got it with yummy almond "harvarti"!  :)>>>

I live in Boone, so I'm close by to Asheville but still too far away to make a road trip for good vegan food. :( Boone is great, but Asheville is just gorgeous.
