What's the deal with Veggie Slices?

Sooooooo annoying!!!!!
My store doesn't carry any vegan cheese but they do have Veggie Slices and every few months I am duped into picking them up and reading the label "Veggie Slices? Wait maybe-- "
and I am so annoyed every single time. (They contain casein, of course...of course! ::))
What is the point of Veggie Slices??? Why don't they just call them "lactose-free but still contain casein slices"?! As if "veggie" makes a mock cheese sound appealing anyway... I really just don't get it!
That crap is the only stuff available in my store, too. Makes me mad.
>:( I hate them!!! Those Veggie Slices tricked me once, but never again!!!
You all have to remember that the larger market is not vegan, they are omnivores. That cheest is geared towards health concious omnivore. They want to cut down on cholesterol so they buy this cheese, yes it has a milk product in it, but their customer base doesn't care, they only care about the fat and cholesterol mark on it. Our population is aging, and those people are also the ones who believe that to be vegan means eating salads all of the time. That is the largest customer market today.
I first saw that "cheese" a few years ago when I went vegan...at first I was excited...yeah, I found a cheese replacement and then it was like...D*mn casien!!! So I never tried the stuff. Then ago I don't like the vegan cheeze either.

They are very, very, very, very, very (very), very stupid. :P
Before becoming vegan I focussed on non-dairy products due to being lactose intolerant and I purchased the Veggie Slices. They didn't affect my stomach badly, which was a plus but tasted like crap. Once going vegan I remember reading the stuff had casein in it and now just look at them and nod my head in annoyance, sitting right there so comfortably with the tofurkey and tofu products. BOO!!!!
Yeah, it is annoying and the Rice brand cheese.
I believe they are both made by Galaxy who also makes the Vegan brand cheeses and Parmesan.

Rice slices now have vegan versions of all of them. I asked my HFS to carry them and now they do! They aren't that bad, really! No casein!
I think the veggie slices are for the lactose intolerant. Apparently, the casein doesn't bother LI people (my SIL is very senstive to dairy and she eats this stuff just fine).
veggie slices are dumb.
they got me too.
i made a grilled cheese sandwhich with them, and luckily my mom told me before i bit into it.
I got so excited when I went into my HFS in search of actual vegan cheese (I have previously avoided it like the plague) and saw a whooole section but EVERY GODD*MN ONE --save two--had caesin! My only other options were VeganRella or Vegan Gourmet. Vegan Gourmet's cheddar smells spot on, but it tastes absolutely horrible. And, truly, when putting it on my top of a "Mexican" lasagna, I nearly hurled from the smell alone. Hmm. I think my body is trying to tell me that it wants NO cheese, vegan or otherwise...
Trader Joe's soy cheese has casein as well.
Yeah, I thought they were vegan at first too... they tasted ok, like processed American cheese, and then I realized they had casein. Then I realized everything had casein. What's it for? I think someone told me it's for texture or to imitate the stretchiness of cheese or something... but considering the stuff doesn't even melt, why????
Yup. rice cheese, almond cheese, etc etc etc all has casein. It seems like the only ones that are vegan say "VEGAN" boldly on them.
Trader Joe's carried Tofutti cheese (slices, not cream cheese; both vegan) for a few weeks there, until it replaced it with its own brand... that's not vegan. ???
It made me especially sad, because they sold the tofutti for 2.50. it's like 4 bucks at the other HFS that has it.
(by the way, the Tofutti cheese is tasty, and sort-of-almost melts, and works on pizza. but i think it's got hydrogenated oils like many Tofutti products...)
This is a good Vegan product that taste like cheese... I'm always very careful to read the label too.
