so, my sister just gave me a bunch of small stuff of hers b/c she's trying to clean out her house, and among them was this little heart tin of altoids with heart mints, so i was like how cute, yeah yeah i want it, and then later i looked at the ingredients, and they have gelatin in them :/
what are some things you have discovered to your surprise are vegan? orr not vegan?
surprise! vegan:
oreos
nutter butter
various egg noodles
peanut chews
hard caramel
egg rolls
albertson's croissants
pork- and chicken-flavor thai instant ramen
surprise! not vegan:
every american dark chocolate (well, except our "hippy" brands)
churros
breads
jiffy mixes and some cake mixes (tallow!)
instant konbu dashi
many kinds of veggie cheese
"non-dairy" creamer
"non-dairy" soft serve
produce sealed with beeswax!
ok that second list could be a lot longer, but i'll leave the rest up to you...

Oooh! I totally just found out those were vegan today! There were some for sale at a school fundraiser and I checked out the ingredients. Not healthy, but vegan! ;)b

trader joes rice milk, not vegan enough (used on equipment that also processes fish, ew).
trader joes organic dark and truffle chocolate bars, so divine, so divine. vegan.
smart balance spread, has vegan written all over it but contains lactic acid? Need to confirm... vegan or not?
most el cheapo cookies at any supermarket. vegan.
lava bar soap at work, NOT vegan. Contains sodium tallowate.
my rabbit, vegan and cute. Ha.
kim chee typically made with some type of fish sauce. not vegan. unless specified at certain markets.

I ate a whole bag of Quorn brand fake chicken breast before I looked at the ingredients......who knew fake chicken contained egg whites??? damn, and they were good too!

Yeah, I was a li'l sad when I noticed that too (all Quorn), but luckily I looked first. I used to eat a lot of Quorn stuff..but I think it made me sick one time, so I was always a little bit wary of it. ???
I was very unhappy to find "fish" as one of the ingredients in a box of name brand microwave popcorn (I don't remember which one now--but it was like orvill redenbachers or popsmart or something like that--like a major name brand)
Happy vegan find--Bells beer--almost the whole line is vegan!!! Try the Oberon--it's their summer ale and it is sooooooo good--make sure you put in a big slice of orange into it!!!

is the smart balance organic? i think it should be vegan...there is one versiion of the spread that contains whey though.

Lactic acid in processed foods usually doesn't come from dairy. If it says it's vegan, then don't worry about the lactic acid. The Smart Balance Light is vegan; the "normal" one contains whey.
Bell's beer? Where are you from? That is made in my old college town! :)

My favorite ironically vegan thing on the accidentally vegan list is Chik-O-Stix (I haven't tried them though).
Most flavored potato chips: not vegan. Most BBQ flavored potato chips: vegan.
Not vegan: a can of nuts (maybe planters?) that had gelatin in it! Yuck! Be sure to read those labels! ???

Oh, yeah. Planter's Dry Roasted Peanuts have gelatin, for some stupid reason (though I think the low salt/no salt ones don't) Most store brand dry roasted peanuts don't contain gelatin.

what i think is weird is that the regular lays barbeque chips are vegan...but the baked ones have chicken fat..why? if anything it should be the other way around..grr. >:(

You shut your mouth LA! :-X I used to have a serious dorito addiction. Going vegan was the thing that finally made me kick it. I hope I never see those in the store.
