A question about moldy vegetables...

I don't know if I should even admit to this, but sometimes when my fruits and vegetables get moldy I eat them anyway. For example, I just made some eggplant that had mold growing on the top, on the green part. I just cut it off and cooked the non-moldy part. Is that bad? I mean, the rest of it didn't look bad or smell or anything and I don't feel sick... Does anyone else do this? I just hate waste!

I think it's probably okay to do that, as long a you cut off all the mold and make sure the part that you're eating is still good.

I've been known to do this but only with veg I intend to cook. I kid myself it's safer that way. A lot goes to how we were raised. It's only in the last few yrs I have learned that if something has been around too long, or really doesn't taste good (like say a failed recipe), it is OK to throw it out. I'm so well trained I sometimes ask my husband, who hates all vegetarian dishes, just so he'll give me permission to toss whatever.

I do this all the time, and I'm still alive. 8)

So... I'm not totally gross?  :)

I used to do that all the time. I recently read somewhere that it is okay to do it with hard stuff, (potatoes, carrots, etc,,), and not okay with soft stuff, (pears, tomatoes, etc.,). The reason for this is that the mold spores spread throughout the fruit or veg, making it all moldy. So now when I have a peach that is moldy, I compost it :( "(Even though it kills me to waste it). Moral of the story, only get what you will use when it's fresh!

I agree that this does have a lot to do with how we're raised.

In my house growing up, we would only throw something out if the whole thing was beyond edible.  I am quite accustomed to slicing off "bad" parts and eating the rest...I haven't gotten sick from it yet.

but since I feel confident that my system can handle such potentially/almost rotten foods, I will not serve the offending food to anyone else if I can help it.......I had this partially used, cut zucchini in the fridge last week that had gotten slimy and mushy on one end....I cut the bad stuff off and used it in a stir-fry, but I did not dare give any to Zumi (as I almost ALWAYS do when cutting zuch's, because she lurvessss it)....I just don't want to be the cause of someone else's sickness.  I'd be okay with mildly poisoning myself, if it serves to teach me a lesson....I guess.

Yeah, I usually only do this when I am cooking for myself or a friend who has agreed to eating rotting vegetables with me!

On a side note, I just ate some moldy pineapple! Haha.

Me too...I have been known to quote that bit in the Bible back at God about how the believer can supposedly eat poison and it won't hurt them, when in the days when money was supertight I discovered that whatever I was about to cook (meat mostly, gross gross) was "off." I would pray over it and remind God of that verse, and then cook it thoroughly. Nobody's ever gotten sick off my cooking yet.  ;)

While if something is on the edge, like a zuch getting squishy on one end, I will use the good portion.  If its blatant green fuzzies I throw it out.

But then again, I have had food poisoning and my system is cranky because of IBS.  I am also aware that you can even kill yourself by eating seriously bad foods.  Sure it would take something drastic (and possibly bad tasting) but its possible, even eating vegan.  :(
