Please help with soy milk $ other cow milk alternatives...

I have been a dairy addict most of my life.  I'm wanting very much to switch to soy or some other alternative to cow's milk. Can anyone help give specific brand names to products that taste good.  I don't know if there is something similar to milk or if I need to get over the idea of tasting milk and find something that just tastes good.  What's the scoop on all that's out there.  When I stand before the soymilk section my head swims from the choices. Thanks.

im severly allergic to dairy so milk alterantives is kind of my life lol.

I love Silk brand. unsweetened for cooking, plain for baking, vanilla or chocolate for drinking. I do go through a lot of soy milk in a week simply because ive gotten so used to it i can sit down and drink a large glass of unsweetened soy milk (not something i recommend for a new drinker.)

For travel i do use Better Than Milk, i go to Alaska every year for 3 months with my inlaws and this travels so much better. I mix a little stronger than the packaging calls for and add vanilla to it.

In coffee now im newly Vegan so don't jump on me but i surely know its dairy free. Theres a brand of creamer called Mocha Mix, i know they also make a dairy free ice cream which is Vegan from all i can tell.  Its excellent tastes just like coffee creamer and when we go out for breakfast i take some with me in a little cup even.

Now ive tried soy milk in coffee (blech), ive tried the new soy silk coffee creamer (blech). Just doesn't cut it for this coffee girl.

I haven't had milk in a really long time, but by far, my favourite soy milk is So Good, the Original Fat Free kind. Although the taste might be a little much for you right away, you might want to try switching to vanilla first.

Just something to know about Silk. Since it is a very common soy milk. (My favorite alternatives. Kikkiman Pearl original soy milk, Almond Breeze Chocolate. Rice milk is also good.)

1. They're owned by a Dairy company who are putting organic dairy farmers out of business

2. They are dumping U.S. organic soybean farmers and using cheap, slave-labor soybeans from China, where "organic" standards are a joke.

Read it yourself then tell every vegan you know:

HORIZON AND AURORA BANNED IN CO-OPS

One month ago, after a poll of our members, the Organic Consumers Association called on consumers to boycott dairy companies like Horizon and Aurora for their practice of raising "organic" cattle on intensive confinement feedlots. A number of natural food stores and co-ops across the U.S. are beginning to respond to concerned consumers and removing suspect dairy products from their stores.

The Wedge Co-op in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the second largest co-op in the U.S., no longer carries Horizon products. In Colorado, the Boulder Co-op Market, has also discontinued stocking Horizon products. Amy Wyatt, Assistant General Manager for the Co-op, says, "Based on our concerns regarding Horizon's practices, we didn't feel that continuing to carry this company's products was consistent with our mission and values. Dean Foods, Horizons parent company, is also starting to come under fire for abandoning U.S. organic soybean farmers and importing cheap soybeans from China, where organic standards are dubious, and farm labor wages and conditions are abysmal. Dean Foods now controls the nations largest organic soymilk brand, Silk, as well as the largest organic tofu brand, White Wave.

I don't like soy milk at all, I think it is icky. But I know that if you are going to go the soymilk route that you will have the best luck with Silk.

At home, I drink Rice Dream Rice Milk. It is very good, great in cereal and good all by its lonesome, just make sure you get it enriched. I usually get the plain for my cereal in the evening.

Another great cow alternative is Almond milk. There are lots of good brands, but I like Almond Breeze the best, especially in the winter, the chocolate Almond Breeze heated up is a very good hot chocolate. But my boyfriend likes to drink the unsweetened Almond Breeze, which tastes quite distinctly of almonds. It is harder to find though (the unsweetened) there are other brands of Almond milk though.

When I first went off of milk, I tried all sorts of alternatives, soy, rice, almond, oat, multi-grain. I suggest you do this, try a few different types (and brands) and see what you enjoy.  Especially if you go with soy milk, you should try different brands because different brands look and taste different. I cannot drink a milk that is a tan color (like some soys are) it grosses me out.

Oh, sorry this is so long, but there are also blends of milk, I have a good friend that buys west soy soy milk and Pacific rice milk, mixes them about 50/50 and it tastes very similar to real milk (to the point where if I hadn't seen him mixing them, I don't think I would have been able to tell a difference in taste). Or you can just buy it already mixed, but it may be more expensive that way.

Milk- alternatives can take a little time to get used to. My daughter loves her different milks though. We buy...Edensoy (all flavors, especially chocolate, although she prefers the reg. on her cereal)and Rice Dream (all flavors). I've tried them too and they really aren't so bad. We go with these brands because they are made without cane products as she has a sensitivity to that too. If you can have cane...chocolate Silk is my favorite. :)

My family likes Silk brand--especially the very vanilla.  I only use plain soy milk or rice milk in cooking.  It's not going to taste exactly like milk, but you do get used to it--at least I have and so have my girls.

I've been lactose intolerant for a good portion of my life, and I've found that rice milk is actually the most like milk.  I also enjoy soymilk, so either is fine...
If you're feeling daring, I found a drink combo that tastes surprisingly good...about 2 parts of a carbonated water, flavored with a little lemon and lime juice, 1 part rice milk, and a teaspoon or two of grenadine...it's one of those things that you either love or you hate though! :P
