jicama (what is)

I wonder if you could tell me what jicama is?  I have seen it mentioned in few recipes, and would like to try it.

Jicama is a plant from Central America. I had it once in a restaurant- only the roots are eaten, and they taste a bit like apples... no idea where to get them, though.

It's available here (the southwest) at regular grocery stores.  Elsewhere, I might try a Mexican food store.  My favorite way to eat it is in fruit salads.

Thank you for your help.  I live in U.K. and probably can't source jicama. :)

That's too bad.  I like jicama.  It's readily available in grocery stores here in Florida.  It's versatile because you can use it in both fruit salad dishes and in regular salads.  That's how I usually eat them.
