Cooking brown rice in a rice cooker

Help!!  I finally bought brown rice and want to cook it, but I've never done it before.  I read in one of the posts that it takes longer.  I have a rice cooker which I've used for years for white rice (I always manage to screw up rice when I try to do it on the stove) - do I need to do anything differently?  Should I add more or less water or cook it the sames as white rice?

Thanks so much!  I'm just so ignorant in the kitchen  ::)

My cooker cooks for a standard amount of time. I don't get to tell it how long to cook something (but I could just turn it off if I wanted to, I suppose). It does say to put more water in the pot for brown rice than for white.

Thanks Bookmama - mine also cooks for a set amount of time.  Do you know how much extra water?

I'm so proud of myself - I tried cooking the brown rice on the stove and it turned out perfectly!!  Yay me  ;D

My instruction booklet says an additional cup of water. (I have an Aroma Rice Cooker/Food Steamer.)

Thanks again bookmama - I lost my instruction manual during one of my various moves :)  Truth be told, it was almost easier to make it on the stove - my rice cooker is such a pain to clean afterwards because the bowl is not non-stick.  I'm going to try the rice cooker and see how that goes - it's nice to make larger amounts and save them for later meals.

Thanks baypuppy - it sounds like I may need to upgrade anyway.  It never occured to me to try using it for anything other than rice - man, I need to think about side the box (or rice cooker as it were)  ::)

Okay - I promise to stop posting after this because my brain is processing very slowly due to the antihistimine I took earlier (d**n Texas rain is making my allegies go crazy).

Baypuppy - do you follow the regular cooking instructions for the non-rice stuff that you cook (i.e. use the recommended amount of water for oatmeal and quinoa if you were making it on the stove top) or did your instruction manual come with a how-to for those things?

Sorry - if this doesn't make sense - I'm off to bed!

What would you consider "on the cheap side?" What is the most you'd be willing to pay for one?

I got mine as a gift for Christmas from bookpapa. I'll ask him if he remembers how much it was. I don't think it was $50 but I'm really not sure. I'll check with him and get back to you.

Yeah, so far I've only cooked rice in mine--that's why I wanted one, anyway. Don't have plans to use it for steaming--I steam on the stove or in the microwave.
