Hey y'all, i just got a box of tazo chai tea bags and i lovveee chai tea lattes. so...how would i make this? just boil milk instead of water and pour over the tea bag? thanks!
Yeah, steep your chai bag in hot milk and make it nice and sweet.
"Chai" is already tea. Cha means tea.
I'm pedantic like that.
thanks! and lol, yay for me being redundant! hahahaha
You can also steep the tea in a smaller amount of water than you would normally use, then fill the rest of your mug up with milk (heat up the milk if you're adding more than a little bit). If your milk of choice is already sweetened, you might not need a lot of sugar.
I like to make bagged chai extra concentrated - 2 tea bags in about 10 oz water, then add a generous spoonful of sugar and a splash of soymilk.
My Indian restaurant uses regular black teabags, steep in half the amount of water for 5 min, remove bags, and then add hot milk and chai masala and let it stand for another 3.
I realise if you've already got the chai bags, that wouldn't quite be what you want. Just puttin' in out there.
Ok, this sounds delicious and I have to try it later...
Would it work with coconut milk, or will that add a wierd taste?
It's the only non-dairy milk I can get my boyfriend to use =\
Coconut milk would be delicious. The fat can get a little oily on the top, though.
so i just made some (with 2 tea bags) and it wasn't nearly strong enough. i couldn't taste any of the spices. maybe i sweetened it too much?

Unless you made it waaaay sweet, I think either the bags were old or you didn't let it steep long enough--at least 5 min.
That's why I don't like bag tea...you don't know how much of the ingredients is actually in there or how good they are. With loose tea and spices, you can smell them and tell somewhat. If a teabag doesn't smell very much, the contents won't taste like much.
thanks yg. i let them steep for 5 mintues at least :[ i'm sad. oh well, i'll try next time
I discovered this from a local cafe shop by me. For chai lattes, add the tea, then pour in either boiled/steaped milk(I use almond breeze-sweetened since I do not drink dairy) you can find it in any grocery store. It's much better for you than soy milk honestly. Then lightly sprinkle in some cinnamon on top or even add vegan whipped cream if you so choose.
Mmmm
thanks medea, yeah thats what i did, but it was still bad. oh well, i can live without it.

Huh, what a coincidence - this is my first revisit to the food forum since I came back to VW, and the first two threads I read had this topic in common... that Indian Food Rocks blog yabbit linked had a whole post about how chai IS tea, and need not be called 'chai tea'. No offense to you, vh, I don't think you'd be redundant on purpose ;) ;D but I'm with yabbit, and the IFR lady. Bit of a grammar nazi, I'm afraid. ::)
I wanna try and find me some chai masala - I like the idea of mixing up my own spicy tea.
I make my own masala, Heli...just grind the spices and add a pinch with the hot milk. OK, a whole whackin' great teaspoon. Whatever. ;)b
I make my own dry chia spice so i can make a cup or pitcher very easily. By the cup since my kettle went kaput i mix some spice and little water in a mug then microwave for 1 min, then steep a bag of black tea in that for a few minutes then remove and press, add rice milk and heat again then sweeten..... and that sounds tasty so im going to go do that now lol
Oops, I forgot to reply to this. Which spices are in your chai masala, yabbit? :)
Cinnamon, clove (go easy, a little clove goes a long way), ginger, the seeds of one green cardamom pod, sometimes a few black peppercorns, a star anise if I've got some (fennel seed if I haven't). Blitzed in my spice grinder (aka electric coffegrinder), it'll keep nicely for a few weeks in a tightly-capped glass jar. What's really nice is if you've got some dry orangepeel. It's lovely when you make the tea in coconut milik.
Thanks yabbit, I'm so gonna try that ;)b
