Buttermilk Replacement

What's the best way to replace buttermilk? I'm trying to veganize my mom's red velvet recipe and it calls for a cup of buttermilk. I've tried soy milk and vinegar, but I haven't been pleased with the results. Could almond or coconut milk work? Yogurt?

I would try yogurt or half yogurt, half milk (whatever kind you like).

I always do almond milk + apple cider vinegar, and haven't had problems.

personally I use almond milk but oat milk will work too. I'm also not a big fan of coconut milk but be warned that It might not work because of the fat content in cocomilk. In the past I've used soy milk as well. Heres the formula you'll want to use:

1 cup any nondairy milk+ 1 tablespoon white vinegar (distilled or rice wine) for every 1 cup of buttermilk called for.
