Official California Potluck Logisitics Thread (PLEASE READ)

Hi everyone,

As co-chair of the invitation committee for the 2009 California Potluck (aka Sconefest) I need the following info from everyone interested in attending:

Would you be available to attend on August 8th, 2009?
If not, when would you be available?  Be as specific as possible and limit yourself to August, please.

I know that it's a year away, but we need to start gauging level of interest and commitment now in order to plan effectively.  Otherwise, next summer will roll around and no one will know what's going on.  Just trying to prevent mass chaos/anarchy/tears/hurt feelings/wasted money.

Thank you!

(none so far)

ftr, I'm getting absolutely shitfaced at this shindig.  Which I rarely do.  But the epic-ness of it all allows it.

Also, there'd best be dancing.  Lots of it.

I'll watch out for you, dear. I don't drink, so I'll be your babysitter. Make sure you don't make a complete ass of yourself.

about the savings thing.  i started using capital ones online savings, my savings account is almost at 4% right now!  and it's supposed to go up to 5% soon.  YAY!  I've made 70$ in the past 5 months or so.  so YEAH!  its super easy and its all online, and since you nerds are always online anyways, its a sweet deal.  just sayin.

Is it free to set up an account, and stuff? Gimme a link!

I'm pretty sure its free.  just go to www.capitalone.com and click on online savings account.  i'm looking at it again and i think the interest rate went down.  maybe because of the economy?  but it used to be higher.  anyways.  its still a good deal.

another good way to get interest is to make a CD.  8-)

That's seriously confusing considering the thread topic.

hahahah

People that reference the state of California by calling it Cali confuse me.  I always called it CA, phonetically sea A.  But then again, I left 13 years ago?  At the least I think.

We are thinking of going to visit my fam, but they are outside Yosemite and we were talking May.  So that doesnt really apply.  I guess if I save my pennies I could try to just fly out solo and fly back the next day.  But dunno how that will pan out.  Gotta see how we end up on taxes, our plans to landscape the house this year and how much we are participating at faire this year.  Too much up in the air just yet for me. Sowy! Maybe in April I will know.

I'll be bringing my twin with me.  She's worried some strange psycho will kidnap me if I come alone so she's agreed to eat vegan for the weekend.  :)

THAT is what twinship is all about-- going vegan for your sister for a weekend so she doesn't get kidnapped. :)

Not to offend anyone...but I hear it's only outsiders who call California 'Cali'. I tend to divide it up in my head into northern and southern California, and just say the whole thing.  :)>>> California, both parts.

Ha!  I say Cali, but only to outsiders.  I think that inside California there are so many distinct and obvious parts that one word doesn't describe the whole state, it has to be done in sections.  But, then, cali came from Cali, so she's probably down.

To non-Californians.  All of these areas are DISTINCTLY different.  I'm not sure what I could refer to, other than natural disasters, that would carry into different regions.  If I made a statement or generalization it would have to be tied to a region.

Looking at a map of Prop 8 results also gives you a feel for the state:

To non-Californians, though, it's all ambiguous, so I just say Cali to them.

I stand corrected. However...

I-5 does!
Ha! :)

Hm, I'm from the north coast, although not actually on the coast, then moved to the south coast, and am now in the inland empire. I'd never seen a map like that, learn something new every day...

As a native Los Angeles-...er?ian? I feel that I have to contest the usage of the term "The City" to denote San Francisco. Clearly, Los Angeles is The City. Yes, SF is awesome, but that doesn't mean (for instance) that the title "The City" gets taken away from NYC to denote some city on the east coast that is actually cool and doesn't have its self-importance rely on its own size alone.
It just fits... people from L.A. are thought to be selfish, vain, and what have you. It only makes sense that we would consider ourselves THE city.
So THERE.
