Veganomicon Recipes

OK, I bought my copy of Veganomicon (cookbook from the same authors as Vegan with a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World) last week at Barnes & Noble.  Over the weekend, I made my first recipes from the book.  I made the Chickpea Cutlets with the Mustard Gravy.  I also made the Tomato-Rice Soup with Roasted Garlic and Navy Beans.  For sweets, I made the Chocolate-Chocolate Chip-Walnut Cookies.  Everything was really good.  I've been having a difficult time staying away from the cookies, they're so good (very thin, crispy, chewy!).  Has anyone else here purchased this cookbook yet and made any recipes?   I'd love to hear what people are making and enjoying from this cookbook.  I really enjoy Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero's other cookbooks, and I'm looking forward to exploring more in this new book.

I made the fudgy-wudgy blueberry brownies only I subbed in raspberry and they were TOO good. seriously, really good. definately not a cake-like brownie, DEFINATELY fudgy. but just the way I likes em:)

Oooh! I can't wait until my copy comes! I'm still looking for the perfect brownie.

well, this one was fabulous. i suggest adding more raspberry preserves/ frozen raspberries than it calls for because I wished there was more fruit in them. but still, they were excellent.

Let's see. I can't wait for this semester to be over so I'll have lots of time for cooking!!! Here's what I've already made:
-Caesar Salad- AWESOME. I've eaten so much lettuce in the past few days because of this awesome dressing. The croutons are good too.
-Blue Flannel Hash- Again, awesome. I added garlic, because I love garlic.

I'm planning on making:
- Smlove Pie looks really good too, but I need to find some brown rice syrup before I can make it and I need to get arrowroot from the hfs.
- Vanilla Yogurt Pound Cake - Pound cake? Vegan?
- Penne Vodka
- Roasted Eggplant and Spinach Muffuletta Sandwich
- Beanball Sub ( probably the one I'm most excited about, I literally think about this recipe all the time, I really need to make it.)

There are also a lot of good recipes for sauces and whatnot, some of which look really appetizing. This is definitely my favorite out of all their cookbooks, the recipes are much more accessible.

And of course, the chickpea cutlets.

I ran out to Barnes & Noble last night at 10 p.m. to buy this book... 8) I was going to order it on Amazon (FINALLY!), but it said it would ship in 1-3 weeks! I can't wait that long! :P It looks pretty amazing, and I wasn't expecting it to be so full of recipes! :D

One quick question: I swear I read on an Amazon review that there was a section devoted to Thanksgiving... But now I can't find it. Is there?

Well, I couldn't find it either. I just happened to have my copy with me in Boston so CeltKat could look at it and I looked in the index and at all the sections. I even thought perhaps in the menu section there was a suggested Thanksgiving menu. Nada. Perhaps there are recipes that mention their being good for Thanksgiving, but I didn't check each recipe, of course. Sorry to disappoint! :(

Argh! That's why I rushed out & got it. ;D Oh, well... Now I can enjoy all of its other deliciousness. :D I am making the chickpea cutlets & scalloped potatoes for dinner tonight! I am way more excited than any sane person should be about a meal...

Thank you for checking for me, bookmama! Perhaps I can pull together some sort of meal from the recipes on my own. I am just having difficulty because I'm not hosting Thanksgiving & I have to bring the food for myself & my boyfriend over to his parents' house! I don't know how to keep my food warm, etc. Oh, well! I'll problem-solve.

Thanks again!

I'm so happy that this thread is still going!  I just got back from being out of town for a week for my granny's funeral.  Of course, after flying and being around illness (dad's got a bad cold with a throat and ear infection), now I'm sick >:(.  It will likely be a few more days before I'm really cooking much, but y'all have given me some great ideas.  I don't know what I'll make next as so many things sound good that you guys have mentioned.  Mousakka with Pine Nut Cream, Beanball Subs, BBQ Seitan & Coleslaw Sandwiches, Jalapeno Corn Gravy, Roasted Eggplant and Spinach Muffuletta, ...  Please keep all the recipe comments coming!!

I made the focaccia and it came out great. My roommate and I brought it to her birthday dinner at my friend's house and it was devoured with olive oil and balsamic!

I made the smlove pie when someone (i think it was idioglossia) posted the recipe here a year or so ago. Anyway, it's very rich and not healthy by any means but boy is it good!

I made the silken mayo dressing today (the garlic aoli variation) and used it for a chickpea salad. I didn't have any white pepper, so I omitted it completely. It was very tasty in my salad, but very runny. Maybe it'll set better when it sits overnight in my refrigerator. I did halve the recipe because it says it does not keep well and I can't see myself using a pound of mayo in the next three days!  :o

I'd give you $100 if you could, though... 8)

i just got done wolfing down the beanball subs. You have to make the beanballs, marinara, and pine nut sauce. This is totally the best thing i've made out of the book, it tastes just like what i remember a meatball sub tasting like, but without all the stringy meat. I'm really full!!

I've really been wanting to make these! I'm glad the work was worth it... I think I'll make them tonight! :)

jessacita, let me know if you like them or not. I fed them to my boyfriend and his roommate and they loved them too.

I made the chewy oatmeal raisin cookies and I thought they were okay, but everyone else thought they were fabulous. I found them to be just a little bland, so i made a caramel-esque glaze and drizzled the rest with them and that made them AMAZING. My boss said they were the best cookies he had ever eaten.

I made the Herb Roasted Scalloped potatoes and loved them.

I definitely will! I actually made the "One Wild Chick!" soup recipe from Eat, Drink & Be Vegan for dinner tonight, but the Beanball Subs are soon to follow!

Also, I made the pastry crust recipe from Veganomicon today for apple pie, and it is PERFECT! My mom (who was a little nervous to make a pie crust with vegan butter ::)) has been raving all day & saying that "This is the best pie crust I've ever had in my life!" :D It is flaky & buttery & just awesome.

I seriously love this cookbook. It's one of the only ones I've actually (successfully) made recipes out of. Usually I'll buy a cookbook, look through the recipes and never make anything. I can't stop making crap out of this one! It's like a big huge vegan bible. Better than Vegan Planet.

With all of these rave reviews, i think i'm going to need to get this book soon! Regardless, i think i'd have to get it just because of the pound cake recipe! But man am i gonna get fat with a book like that...

seriously, i can feel my hips expanding as i write this... I'm making the pound cake tomorrow or tuesday for Thanksgiving, is it better to let pound cake sit out for a couple of days before you eat it?

I think it would be better at least a day after making it- at least that's the way i like most of my quick breads. I would think pound cake would be similar, no? Please let me know how it turns out!
