Skinny Bitch.....

I started reading Skinny Bitch on my vacation from H*ll.  I was just outside reading it because I took today off.  I have laughed so hard at some of their comments but I am now on the slaughterhouse chapter.  Nothing like sitting outside as people walk by with tears streaming down my face.
As far as I am concerned, if the book continues on in this vein, everyone is school should have to read it.
Although Skinny Bitch is written by two women and Bitch is a female term, the knowledge and advice is for both sexes.
Highly recommend it as a must read.

I didn't want to read that chapter, but I forced myself to.  It has helped me empathize even more than I already thought I did.  It's horrible.

I agree, everyone should have to read it.  Despite that chapter, it's hella funny!!!
I carry it with me in my huge purse.  I love it.

Yes, Chapter six made me cry too.  I read parts of it to my DH (the part about the swimming hogs) and he started buying Gimme Lean sausage instead of the "regular" one he used to buy.  Baby steps but steps just the same!

Thanks for the reminder.  I've heard others mention it's good.  I'm gonna go order it.  One of my younger sisters is telling me she's interested in going veggie.  Is it a good book to help motivate a beginner/on-the-fencer?

If you can force her to read chapter six in it's entirety, firefightress, I'm guessing it would motivate anyone to jump clear over the fence to veganism.  At the very least, vegetarianism, which is fantastic anyway.

Just the chapter title is nearly enough.

I have found this to be one of the most aspiring books I have read in a long time and I am just half way through.

Anyway, they are coming out with a cookbook to be released in December.  Here is the link:

http://www.amazon.ca/Skinny-Bitch-Kitch-Kick-Ass-Solutions/dp/0762431067/ref=sr_1_2/701-0970223-0599559?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184700832&sr=1-2

I am going to pre-order it.

As well, I am going to heed a lot of their advice and make some big changes in my dietary habits.  A totally amazing book!

Thanks to whoever first recommended it a couple of months ago.

I pre-ordered it a couple weeks ago- I can't wait to get it.  It will be a nice Christmas present for myself!  And for you too!

This book is what made me decide to become veg. It really opened my eyes to what goes on in factory farms, I really had no clue before reading it. I flew through the book in one night - couldn't put it down & I still refer back to it. And I tell everyone I know that it is what made me decide to go vegan!

Yes, I am quite excited!  I so have to cut down on cheese. One of my addictions.
One of the comments in Skinny Bitch is if you can't do it all at once, cut one thing out a week.  Most of you know what I will try once again to cut out....smoking!  I didn't smoke for the 5 1/2 days I was camping.  Came home, was stressed and smoked.  The second thing I really need to cut out is aspartame.  I must stop drinking Diet Coke and find a better alternative to mix with drinks or to drink alone.
I love Tropicana and President's Choice juices not from concentrate so will try grapefruit and pineapple juice as mixers. I also love cranberry juice. President's Choice also has some organic juices that are good and reasonably priced (Unfortunately, a Canadian company and not available in the States)  Good for me but bad for many of you.
Cali, my dog is going to give me the book for Christmas.  I haven't told her yet!  ;D ;D ;D

i wish something like this (or anything) would show my BF how horrible animals are treated (or even the video in the post by TinTexas)

i read books and tell him about things that i read and all the evidence backing it up, he doesn't believe a word that comes out of my mouth. i've been reading about all the poisons in meats and dairy foods and all the hormones---he makes jokes about getting his daily allowance of "bovine growth hormone" and doesnt believe anything about the poisons like dioxin and all that other stuff

it makes me sad. (and then makes me mad when he hears the same thing from someone else and believes it from them)

Skinny Bitch is my bible! I swear i became an overnight vegan with that book. RIGHT after I finished reading it, I went through my kitchen and threw everything away and have had no desire or cravings since then- it's been about 6 months. I've had a few slip ups from not reading the labels thoroughly. I've made  a couple of my friends read it too. One friend, however, skipped chapter 6 because "she doesnt want to know".... oh boy did I let her have it.

I was a little upset with some of the reviews it got about being too vulgar. Give me a break... too vulgar? If the readers think it's too vulgar, why would you pick up the book in the first place with Bitch in the title?

I loved it!  I read it one day!  Despite working with all men who have no problem inserting the f bomb at every other word, I do try not to cuss often, so I could see how some "more delicate" and cuss-conscious people may be taken back a bit by the authors' colorful language, but I did find their use of language rather amusing and had to laugh at it at times.  Chapter six made me nauseas while reading it.

My sentiments exactly, and that is exactly what I tell people who say it's vulgar.

Chapter six made me nauseas while reading it.

Me too.  I knew it would be horrible so I forced myself to read it.  And really, sometimes images of what I read pop into my head, which reinforces the steps I take today to not consume/use things with animal products in them.  I feel so much less guilty!  I'm doing the right thing!  YAY VEG*NS!

After reading this initial post, I picked up a copy, and....wow.  just reaffirms exactly why i'm making all these changes in the first place.  cheese is my one and only weakness, but i feel like reading "skinny bitch" is enough encouragment to keep me focused!

as for the curse words, i have zero problem with it, but it does make me hesitant to pass the book along to my mom, who would greatly benefit from the facts and - no pun intended - meat of the book.  the straightforward manner would work easily on my sister, my bf...just wish i could bleep out a few of the "bad" words so my mom could read it!

great book though.  thanks for putting the word out!

I'm about halfway through the book.  Great stuff!  I had a tough time reading through chapter 6, though.  I read "Fast Food Nation" about a year ago and was disgusted at the descriptions of slaughterhouses.  "Skinny Bitch" made me much more disgusted.  I will definitely have to pick up a copy of "Slaughterhouse" by Gail Eisnitz to read next.  It just amazes me how bad my diet was growing up.  Too bad I didn't know what I do now!!!

I am still waiting for my copy from the library--it has been on hold for months, which annoys be becasue I really want to read it but also makes me happy because that means a lot of other people are reading it too! I am pretty sure I will skip the slaughterhouse chapter--I keep reading everyone on here on this and other incarnations of this thread how sad it is--and I'm totaly going to play my "vegetarian card" by claiming to probably know what is in that chapter anyways... ::)

I'm so glad this book is getting so much positive attention!

My boyfriend asked me to pick a book because he had two with a 3 for 2 offer and couldn't find another.  I picked skinny bitch because of my endless battle to achieve a flat stomach (sigh) with no idea how life changing it would turn out to be.
After reading the chapter on animal cruelty I had to become a vegan right away.  I've always been an animal lover but was rather ignorant and misguided about our food.  After reading the truth it made me feel physical sick - and everytime I feel like a pepperoni pizza I just conjure up some mental images and the urge disappears completely.  This book is a must-read (but not as much of a must-read as Vegan Freak!)

Oh... my sister sent me and link and bought this book a couple of weeks ago. She is not vegan and did not know it was a vegan book until she started reading it. She said that she felt it was too much and the book seemed to put her on the defensive. BUT, she had already put it in the mail for me. She was complaining to me and I was like, "cool, send it to me.  I already agree with them." So I should have it in the mail anyday. I can't wait. I loved the excerpt that was available to read on the website.

No you must read this chapter!  If you are already vegan then great!  Vegetarian is good too, but this chapter also highlights the cruelty suffered by dairy cows and hens.

This book, as the title suggests, is written in raw, crass diction mainly for those interested in being, well, a "skinny bitch."

For this reason, I am a bigger cheerleader for books on embracing a vegan lifestyle, in which the focus is compassion-not weight loss. I recommend picking up something by Stepaniak like "The Vegan Sourcebook" or "Being Vegan."

http://www.amazon.com/Vegan-Sourcebook-Sourcebooks-Joanne-Stepaniak/dp/0737305061/ref=sr_1_7/105-8126185-9017212?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1187899711&sr=8-7

Having said that, I highly recommend the slaughterhouse chapter, which is perhaps one of the best chapters in "Skinny Bitch."
