NancyK, I finally made something from Vegan with a Vengence

I made the white bean & roasted garlic soup. It was pretty good. My husband loved it. I thought it was a little bland, but I also did not have fennel seeds. I don't know how much difference that would have made. I spice it up with a dash of hot sauce.

I'm trying to decide what to make this weekend. Perhaps the white bean & tempeh sausage gravy or Fronch toast with tempeh bacon. They both sound good.

Did you make the Fauxtess cupcakes? Did you use black cocoa powder or just regular? I want to make some Valentine's Day treats & thought they would be great, but the Lemon Gem cupcakes sound wonderful! So many choices, so many calories!

And lastly, does anyone know where you can get arrowroot powder in bulk? The spice isle has little bottles for about $5 a jar --  :o

not sure where you're from, but our huge vegetarian co-op here in san francisco (Rainbow Grocery), has arrowroot powder in bulk. you can get as much or as little as you like.

Oooo! Thanks for the info Lezly, even if you were not speaking to me I appreciate the opinion since I got my VwaV last week.  My sister made the crispy peanut butter cookies but she modified it randomly with more flour and they were very dry.  ::)

I am thinking of making the lemon gem cupcakes tomorrow to take with me on a day trip.  I so want something that glows! mmmm

My health food stores have bulk spices and I can sometimes find arrowroot there.  Its hit or miss though so perhaps ask someone?  Good luck!

No one I know has gotten the peanut butter cookies to turn out. I have made the lemon cupcakes and they are great and quick to make.  You might need a little more powdered sugar with the frosting if it seems too runny.

On her site, she says you need the black cocoa powder, for both the correct color, but also it alters the baking (something about the way it mixes with the baking powder). I got it online at bakerscatalogue.com.  The cupcakes were fantastic. If you don't have time for the whole process, they also taste great without the filling and the white topping.

Also, the fronch toast is great, as are the banana pecan pancakes, the pumpkin walnut cookies, carrot muffins, apple muffins, cumin potatoes, and chickpea broccoli casserole.

I did not have success with the burgers (they never really cooked and the liquid smoke overpowered them I thought),and the chocolate pudding (too rubbery, but check out this recipe as it's great: http://www.vegblog.org/recipes/17).

Also, check out the posting on the VWaV site for typos, especially for pizza crust:

Have you tried penzeys.com for arrowroot?

The Lemon Gem cupcakes are GOOD!!  If you don't have time to make cupcakes, the batter makes a nice little cake.  Whoever mentioned adding more confectioners sugar to the frosting is right.  I've made these twice now, and they turn out fine, just need thicker frosting.  As for the white bean soup...its good w/ the fennel seed, but I don't think I would like it without the seeds...but I'm a fennel seed lover, so who knows?  The stuffed mushrooms are good, so is the sesame asparagus and the sweet potato fries!  They taste yummy with an Amy's Texas "burger"!!  YUM! :D

I received this book for christmas and have so far tried the sun dried tomate & asparagus frittata, which was good, and the rosemary roasted potatoes, which were also good. the potatoes were very versatile and could definitely go with a breakfasty dish or with dinner. they were quite easy, to boot. the only problem was that the onions burned, but after i transferred everything into one pan it was fine.

Yay Lezly! I was going to ask you if you'd made anything yet. As a matter of fact, I just got some black cocoa powder this week (from KingArthur.com site) and was planning to make the Faustess cupcakes.

Has anyone else but me tried the sweet potato crepes with cilantro sauce? I have made that recipe at least 6 times. It's fabulous.  Last week I made the banana waffles (without raisins, didn't have any around) and they were also great.

By the way, the other day Isa's book was around #28 on Amazon's best selling cookbooks list. Not too shabby for a vegan cookbook, eh?

Yeah, I waited 3 WEEKS for my order from Amazon...they ran out!!!  (????) I didn't realize vegan cookbooks were so popular...I take it that its a good sign though...I recently got some of our friends who want to "eat healthy and lose weight" to try some vegan recipes...and they are major meat and junk food eaters!  I told them about the book as well as La Dolce Vegan and The Garden of Vegan (which are awsome by the way)...but its baby steps I guess...are the sweet potato crepes that good?  I may try them..what do you eat with them?

Nancy, I MUST get myself a waffle iron!!! I want to make those lemon-corn waffles with blueberry sauce & tempeh bacon.

I ordered some black cocoa powder today.  :o

What a wonderful cookbook!

Since the black cocoa powder will not be here before Valentine's Day, I will make the lemon cupcakes for the work crowd. Report next week.

Oh my yes. I know I sound like a broken record, but they are beyond great. I bought some sweet potatoes the other day while we were shopping, and my husband's eyes lit up. "Crepes?" he asked? Yup!

We don't served them with anything...they are a meal in themselves. If you like cilantro, you will LOVE the sauce!

All those recipes for sweet potato and here I am allergic to it.  :(

I didn't see any posts on the pizza crust.  ???

I got some arrowroot at the KingArthur site with the black cocoa. I can't wait to try those cupcakes! I lived on Hostess cupcakes when I was a kid.

Thanks Vegan1 for the pizza crust link. I think I am going to make pizza this weekend -- probably tomorrow afternoon. A co-worker has loaned me her pizza stone & I'd like to see if it really makes a better crust. I also want to try Isa's basil-tofu ricotta topping.

Baypuppy, thanks for the feedback on all those recipes. I think today I will definitely try the tempeh sausage crumbles. Sounds like they will go well with Meg Marie's Rockin' Herb Roasted Potatoes, here:

I don't know what I enjoy more, cooking delish vegan food or eating it.  ;D

just made the chocolate chip cookies from VwaV. my co-workers are currently eating them, and everyone seems to like them. they are a littttle on the sweet side, and are very flat which i like. i might recommend using slightly less vanilla and maybe using half white sugar and half brown. i also plan to try adding peanut butter next time. but overall they are good and seem pretty hard to screw up!

Yes, get yourself a waffle iron and try the Pumpkin Waffles.  SO good.  It makes a lot, but I just stick them in the freezer and warm them up in the toaster in the morning.  I also added more spices the second time around because I love all the spices that go along with pumpkin and found there wasn't enough for my liking in the recipe!
