Good vegan cookbooks

Hi...this is my first time posting on this forum even though I have made tons of amazing food based on recipes from the site. I was wondering if anyone knew of any really good vegan cookbooks that were written by nutritionists or health professionals.

I've read the Skinny Bitch cookbook, and while I thought that some of the recipes themselves were good, I have a very hard time trusting the nutritional information Kim Barounin provides because she is not a licensed nutritionist and some of the information she presents has no citations at all. I have found some other good ones, but I'd like to be able to read something written by a professional. I just recently made the complete transition from vegetarian to vegan, and I'm taking it seriously.

Thanks a lot! :)

read the cookbook review threads, lots of great info!

You might be interested in Jack Norris and Ginny Messina's book Vegan for Life, it's both a cookbook and a vegan resource book written by two registered dieticians.

Dr. Neal Barnard just put out a cookbook.  Google him.  I don't have it so can't vouch for it.

Dr. Neal's book Food forLife is extremely helpful in my opinion.  I'd love to have more of his books but alas, never the money anymore to buy the extras in life that I wish I had.  He's great and he's been on air with some great shows about nutritional information.

I'm wondering what cookbooks you've already delved into hollerbee.

Peace.

For her book "Appetite for Reduction" Isa Chandra Moskowitz used an RD named Matt Ruscigno and he wrote a chapter in her book explaining vegan nutrition and now to get all the nutrients you need while being a vegan.

Color Me Vegan by Colleen Patrick Goudrea is a cookbook that focuses on good nutrition through variety getting disease fighting anti-oxidants and phytonutrients.

Brendan Brazier is a professional Ironman triathlete whose passion is vegan nutrition through whole, sometimes raw, high peforming food and he has the blessing of Neal Barnard.  His book has some sound, well researched ideas.  He's recently this year put out a new cookbook.

Dr, Dean Ornish has put out a few books, and his recipes are mostly vegan.

I'm not sure if he's put out any books lately but Dr. John McDougall is a big expert and proponent of vegan nutrition.

I'm important to note that a single meal or recipe isn't going to give you 100% nutrition.  The key to a healthy vegan diet is a wide variety of healthy foods to include veggies of all varieties especially leafy greens but all the colors of the rainbow, legumes, nuts and seeds, fruits of a wide variety and whole grains.  So when cooking ask yourself:  is it whole foods, low in sugar, salt and fat?  If yes, go for it and remember:  variety, variety, variety.

I have Dr. Dean Ornish's Program To Reversing Heart Disease.  It has lots of information on how and why to go vegan and it also has a lot of information on balancing the vegan diet.  It has recipes also but, I haven't tried any yet.

I have everyday Cooking with Dr. Dean Ornish also.  I've looked it over and it has all the nutritional information on the recipes and serving sizes also.  I haven't tried the recipes yet.

I have The McDougall Plan and it also has a lot of information on nutrition and the vegan diet.  The recipes that I have tried are great. It does not have the nutritional facts on the recipes.

I also have The Get Healthy Go Vegan Cookbook  by Dr. Neal Banard and Nutritionist Robyn Webb.  It has a overview of how and why to go vegan and how to balance the diet,  The recipe that I have tried were very good.  They also have nutritional and serving sizes.

I also have Skinny Bitch Ultimate Everyday Cookbook by Kim Barnouin.  I haven't tried the recipes yet but there are a lot that I'm planning on trying. According to her bio she has an MA in Holistic Nutrition.

I really need to post a pic of all my cookbooks because I love cookbooks.  I'll look through some more to see the best ones to recommed to you.  The one I've been usuimg the most lately is the Neal Barnard one.

Look into Becoming Vegan. I know it has tons of information about being vegan written by nutritionists about what to look out for, myths, etc. I can't vouch for any of the recipes but there is a wealth of information there!

Try Veganomicon! It's fantastic, especially the Chickpea Cutlets.

Also, Clean Food by Terry Walters is great. She has different sections for different seasons and the recipes are really good.

I used to have a cookbook that explained protien combinations that make it so that you get more protien by conbining foods. For instance beans and rice give you more protien that either beans and rice do alone. Some of the combinations include soy sauce and rice. beans and cheese,. I lost that cooklbook during the "97" flood here and I can't remember the name of it. If anyone know of a book or good source of protien combinations I would be interested to hear the title. I have tried to search it on the internet and can not find anything on this!

I am looking to find this book to help a young girl that is Vegan and is tired all the time and I think it would help her to have this information. Thank You in advance!

Moonbloodstone I think you are thinking of Diet for a Small Planet.  However, the idea of protein combining at every meal has been largely discredited. It is enough to eat a variety during the day.  If you google "protein combining" there is a lot of information on this. There was a peer reviewed study published a few years ago--I think it was the journal of clinical nutrition or something like that--that addressed the protein combining issue.

if she is tired perhaps she is not eating a well-balanced diet.
