Talk to me about what you feed your vegan companion dog(s)

I'm not looking for an ethical discussion here, but I want some diet information. We'll be rescuing a pup sooner than later, and I've been trying to research this. I read a good E-book, but I want some personal accounts.

Do you mainly cook your dog's food? Do you follow specific recipes? Use only certain ingredients? Do you feed them what you eat?

Do you only use purchased kibble? only purchased other dog food?

Do you use supplements? What kind? How often?

What has worked? What has not worked?

Etc.!

::puppy:  :)

Our dogs eat Nature's Recipe Vegetarian Formula - the dry kind - they only get the canned wet stuff when they're super good.
No supplements, no special cooked meals....they do get a lot of veggies while I'm chopping though...they only thing they won't eat is lettuce.

Oh, and that's awesome that you're gonna rescue a pup!  Good luck!  You can ask me anything - I'm a huge dog lover and have been through a lot with these little jerks.

I use dry dog food but when i am out of school i might try to make their meals again (with a vegedog supplement) i tried feeding my dogs "humanish" food before and my one dog Bella eats it so fast it is disgusting to watch :( she also does this with wet food... so now i feed both of them Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula Ultra Premium Dog Food... my dog Mason used to have a really disgusting and dingy coat before eating this and now it is beautiful! good luck <3

Do you know if this kind has wheat in it? I've been trying to find a dry vegetarian dog food thats wheat free. And my dog likes the wet kind they make.

I've recently bought my dog the Natures Recipe Vegetairan Formula wet food. He love love lovess ittt (and hes a meat lover). Although, i dont know much about balancing the diet and such, i'm just starting to figure it out too. I just know he scarfs that stuff down!

Like erin i also feed my doggie veggies when i'm chopping some up as treats.

AC! Guess what? we just rescued a dog!
Its not a total forever thing YET.....we are trying it out for a month or so to see. We want to make sure he will get along with the cat, kids, and our lifestyle.
I could not get any veg dog food so I had to pick up some meaty stuff. I got the Taste of the Wild brand-dry kibble. I'm not happy about it but I had to get him something. If we keep him, I will transition him to a veg diet. I used to give my other dog the Natures Recipe Veg formula.
He's a wirey haired jack russell.  Age 6.

This is pretty much me, I just haven't bought any of the wet food yet.  Little Otis LOVES the kibble!  It's also really funny when we give him chopped veggies.  We gave him some cabbage, and I think the bitterness made his head shake, but he still ate it.

Sarah, when I was researching food a few weeks ago, I saw a brand that was soy and wheat free, but I can't remember what it was for the life of me.

Hmm, i'll look it up CK. I kind of forget my ability to look dog related things up online (i spend tons of time wandering around reading ingredients on things for him, hah.)
And Otis sounds cute, haha. My dog tends to take veggies, play with them, rip them up (mainly leafy things) and then just put pieces all over so we have to go around cleaning up.

My mom is changing her mind about feeding him vegetarian. But i think if i buy his food she wont mind. And as long as i make sure i give him all he needs, blah blah. But he seems to like it! (except he loves his salmon treats. He pretty much lives for those things, i dont know if i'll take those away from him just yet)

I just made homemade doggie cookies for our new dog and he loves them! totally vegetarian. I could eat them, but they arent that tasty.

i just started feeding my doggies (and kitties) vegan food.  i decided to *try* doing home-made, which has definitely been an experience.  i've discovered they LOOOOOVE seitan and most veggies, until i add the vegedog vitamin supplement which they seem to dislike.  so i'm experimenting with different foods that are pungent enough to hide the vitamin smell, which i can't even smell but somehow my dogs can pick it out of a bowl of stew...

it's been a battle but i'm trying to stick with it, i'm hopeful that once i find a winning recipe i can just make it in bulk once every couple months or something.

Thanks, all!

Where do you buy your packaged foods? I know theres some on vegan essentials, but looks pretty expensive. I'm not excited about supporting a pet store, so I'm hoping its somewhere else.

Unfortunately, we buy ours at Petsmart - I know, I'm a loser, but I don't know where else to get it.  Online would be an option but I have a feeling shipping would be outrageous.
Thats where we take the dogs to get their nails filed, so we're already there....might as well get their food....

Yeah, it's unfortunate! But even if a grocery store did carry it, I don't know that it would be much better. :\ Cruel, cruel world.
