My dog has awful diarrhea. Is there anything I should do? I feel so bad. She's miserable.

My mom and step-dad feed their dog rice when she's sick. Seems to help.

That makes sense, like eating toast when you're sick. I might try that. Thanks.

Do you have an animal homeopathic kit?

No, the only homeopathic thing we've used for her is for fleas. She doesn't get sick very often. Ripped apart by bobcats and coyotes, more often. What would be in the kit?

Rice can be a bit rough on some dogs... Potatoes, maybe? I knew this dog once with a horribly sensitive system, and he lived on potatoes and white fish.

According to Goldstein, treatment of diarrhea begins with putting the pet on a liquid fast to give the digestive tract time to recover (24 hours) then use a 50/50 white and sweet potato diet for a day or so. He also recommends the probiotic lactobacillus and digestive enzymes along with homeopathics (which are the symptom-specific part.) Don't forget to check for worms, if that's a concern.

Thanks, mdvegan. That's awesome advice. She had tapeworms about a month and a half ago, so its a concern. I've had her on a liquid diet so far, and wasn't sure if I should feed her. Thanks again, guys.

Watch for dehydration by monitoring fluid intake and gums. If the gums are dry, the dog might be getting dehydrated. I learned this the hard way when one of mine got colitis and had to stay overnight for fluid resusitation. She immediately felt better after getting some fluid.
Good luck. Rice is indeed a gentle food, as is scrambled eggs which my vet suggested. (Obviously no good for vegans.)

I have an Animal Rescue Kit from Washington Homeopathic Products with about 30 different remedies. Homeopathics (30c) that may be useful for diarrhea include apis, arsenicum, cantharis, carbo veg, china o, phospohorus, and thuja. Your choice in remedy will depend upon the symptoms. There is a great book about homeopathic care here: http://www.amazon.com/Homeopathic-Care-Cats-Dogs-Animals/dp/155643295X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224361081&sr=8-1 and I also really like Dr. Goldstein's book here: http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Animal-Healing-Definitive-Holistic/dp/0345439198/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224361126&sr=1-2
