Sea Kittens!

Love or hate PETA, you've got to give them credit for this.

Who could eat a kitten?

:>

I approve of kittens. I don't think this one is going to catch on, though. Mew.

God love, them do try hard don't they? I've had both really, really good experience with PETA and really BAD experience with them--I think they are a neessary evil of the Animal Rights community--if nothing else, they get people thinking, and start discussions!

Sea kittens! Bwahahaha! I love it!

I think this is the dumbest waste of time ever.  Think of all of the horrible conditions that animals are living in right now that PETA could be using it's power to fix and they spend all this energy (and money) doing stupid crap like this.

My BF's dad lives in Spearfish, SD and PETA is trying to get the high school to rename Spearfish High School to Sea Kitten High School.  South Dakota is already a very conservative, meat-eating, hunting state and now the people there think animal rights activists are just a bunch of wackos.  It really makes me angry--it doesn't help improve animal welfare and it doesn't get people on their side.  It makes people think they are a big joke.

That's awesome. But I beg to differ. At the very least people are talking about the issue.

Sure, this may be ridiculous stuff, but eventually the conversation must turn to the root issues.

Over fishing is horrible for the planet... Something needs to be done about how humans over-fish, pollute and generally abuse the seas.

This seems to me a lighthearted way to at least get the conversation ball rolling in a potentially constructive direction.

You must not know anyone who lives in SD I assume  ;)  I really don't think it's getting any sort of productive conversation going--these people think that PETA is a huge joke and therefore their efforts are also a joke.  Sea kitten?  Seriously?  These people are Carhartt-wearing, rifle-bearing fishermen who, I guarantee you, are not having any sort of philosophical conversations about the rights of fish as a result of this sea kitten business.

Sounds like the rural-type area I grew up in... and look what happened to me.

I'm not saying that this campaign is for everybody. But it is funny, and it is sure to make someone out there think.

Remember the old tv show Mystery Science Theater 3000? I think the philosophy of that show can translate into this campaign:

"The right ones will get it."

And when they "get it", then they'll ask the questions.

Agreed!

I grew up in a very isolated, ignorant, racist, gun toting community and I broke free--mean while my brother who grew up in the same house has about 5 guns, is a total racist and is part of the militia! *scary* some people get it--some people don't, but either way it's important for information to get out there--even if it's in the form of a gag--at least this way it is easy to digest.

Exactly!

If peoples first exposure to vegetarian/veganism is horrific pictures and dire ecological warnings... well, they're more likely to just tune it out. Do the "lalalala!" fingers in ears thing, if you know what I'm saying. Silliness and humor... those can at least get people laughing at PETA, while in their sub concious, questions can form. Maybe.

I highly doubt it.  They should instead be looking at what people value (i.e. they like the outdoors and wildlife, but if they overhunt/overfish, those things won't be there anymore) and base a campaign around that.  I would be willing to bet a decent chunk of cash that this campaign will not make anyone think of fish as "kittens of the sea".  I would find it more likely that it turn into, "Well, I eat kittens of the sea, so why not eat kittens of the land" than I would see it be "Well, I don't eat kittens of the land, so I shouldn't eat kittens of the sea".

I'm pretty sure that's illegal.
