Saved a Young Skunk Today

This isn't really vegan related but I wanted to share with someone and I figured most of the world would think I was weird but I though some of you might understand.  I was driving to work and I saw this small skunk walking in circles in the road.  When I looked closely I saw he had his head stuck in a yogurt container.  I felt horrible but scared.  I finally decided I would feel bad if I didn't try to help even I did get sprayed.  I made clicking noises and it walked toward me but didn't put his tail up so I threw my coat over him.  He (or she - I didn't look that close) lifted his head up under the coat and I tried to get the container off but it was really stuck.  He got out from under the coat and I almost gave up but he was walking in circles in the middle of the road so I tried again.  i made the clicking noises and it came towards me again.  I threw my coat over it and pulled on the container this time I could feel him lift up off the ground and it came off!  I pulled my coat away and he ran one way and I ran the other way.  I felt so glad that he was okay and I wanted to share with someone.  Glad I have this place and other people who love animals to share with.  (I've never started a thread so I hope I did this right.)

Great job!  (and so glad you didn't get sprayed).

Thank you everyone for the kind words about my skunk adventure.  I'm not really new here but I don't often write things.  I love this place though.  I'm the only vegan I know and I've only been vegan for about 7 months (vegetarian for 11 years).  When I log-in and read what everyone says, I feel like I'm part of a community.  I love how positive everyone is and love reading the advice.  I think I've successfully changed from a vegetarian to a vegan because of everyone here.  Thank you.

Did you make sure you threw away the yogurt container in the recycling bin?! ???

JUST KIDDING! ;D

That's a wonderful thing you did, saving a skunk. You're right, many people would think it's weird. I don't. I think it's great.

I chased down two dogs the other day. One I tracked down to its "owners'" house. The owners apparently let the dog run around town in the streets without a collar on. >:( He was very thin and hungry. I swear, if I see that dog on the streets again, I'm gonna take him home with me. The second dog was a really sweet three-legged golden retriever running around the streets and then down the railroad tracks. He had a good head start on me, and he was bookin' down that railroad--I couldn't believe how fast he ran! Good thing I'm a runner because I caught up with him...finally. We were both exhausted. Anyway, he was taken to a rescue by a cop with a dumb and dumber haircut who showed up at the scene AFTER I caught the dog and brought him back to my car. The copsicle (my word for cop--pronounced like popsicle) said that he was trying to catch the dog all day. Apparently the copsicle didn't try very hard, if I could catch the dog within twenty minutes. I did all his hard work...the lazy arsehole. Anyway, the owners were tracked down. Apparently the high winds blew down the gate in their yard, and the dog "escaped." He didn't have a tag on. The rescue found the owners through the chip in the dog's head.

ANYWAY, the point I wanted to make was that when I told my mother about all this, all she had to say was "Why did you do it? It's not your job to do it!" I love my mom, but that pretty much sums up the attitude of most people when it comes to any animal found in a problematic situation on the streets or in nature--wildlife, dogs, cats, etc. People think it's not their job, not their responsibility. I'm so glad that you stopped and helped that skunk--I'm sure he wouldn't have survived had you not helped him/her. Thanks! :)

By the way, it was smart of you to throw your coat over the skunk first. When I volunteered at a wildlife rehab center that's how we handled many of the wild animals...by throwing a towel over the animal's body first...that helps to protect you from their claws, bites, etc., and it also helps to calm the animal (you want to cover its head too, if you plan on picking it up). Though, there are many animals I would suggest refraining from contact...you might want to keep the phone number of your local wildlife rehab center in your wallet or car (I do). If you find an injured or orphaned animal, they often have the best advice on what to do, how to handle the animal, and how to transport it to the center if needed.

Congrats on going vegan! Yay for veganism!

Thats soooo great!  I love skunks almost as much as raccoons.  Someday I want to have a pet skunk sooo much!  ;D  They are such cuties.  The zoo I worked at had like 3 skunks for almost 50 years now, 2 of them have their scent glads still, and they have NEVER sprayed!  They arent 100% friendly because they are rescue animals but they are adorable still.  Everyone always smells the porcupines as they get near the skunk cages and are like 'oh the skunks smell!'  :-X  It always made me so mad!  Poor little skunks, nobody gives them any love.  ;)

Except for viatrix of course  ;D  *hug*
