Here's a link to an article about animal parks in China. It comes with a nifty video clip for all of you animal lovers. Park visitors can buy a calf for $100 and it gets dumped in the middle of a bunch of tigers who are overfed, so they languidly tear the calf apart instead of killing it promptly like in the wild.
A woman there is trying to bring more attention to the treatment of animals because the Olympics are coming up in 2008, so there might be some pressure on them to improve some practices.

Are we the only ones missing some type of gene that allows us to enjoy violence? To cause suffering, or to stand by and watch?....or worse, to partake in causing it?......
That's really disgusting. Is nonviolence really such an unappealing concept? And what a waste of money. There are so many poor, starving, and uneducated people in this world and that's how some people decide to spend their paychecks? Sheesh.
China is really racking up some big points lately. With the contaminated food, killing all domesticated pets because of a rabies scare, and now this. I wonder what some of the less fortunate people live like over there. I wonder if it hasn't got anything to do with some underlying cultural problem in their society.
Let me ask everybody something. Do you really believe that they enjoy the entertainment (as sickening as it is) or do you think they don't know any better?

If they don't know any better, they probably do enjoy it as entertainment. Otherwise, why do it. If they do know better, they probably still do it for entertainment because it is traditional or some such. (Some people know how their meat gets to the table, but they like the taste and think they need to have it so they look the other way or just don't think about it.) :(
I would also hazard a guess that because of China's history of famine and overcrowding (and therefore fewer resources per head) people are far less worried about ethical issues which we are concerned with. For example, there are places in China which still serve dog, and although we'll look at our pet dog and gasp in horror, I would imagine that if your parents and grandparents can remember near-starvation, you become a lot more sentimental about your food. We, the affluent West, can afford to be more ethical.
In turn, it would make sense that a situation like this would attract less outrage, not because some people in China are cruel or enjoy violence per se, but more because there is a lot less sentimentality about their food, caged animals' food and where it comes from. Which doesn't excuse cruelty, but it might suggest why there is perhaps a predisposition towards turning a blind eye. One would think that those actually perpetrating this would be a minority.

And it is certainly clear that people do enjoy seeing violence -- even I, a vegan, can enjoy violence in a movie or video game. Most people enjoy violence more than I do myself. Why do you doubt that they enjoy it?

But it is still different seeing violence in a movie or a video game and paying someone to create some violence before you. In a movie and a video game it's fake.
I've noticed one attitude that the old world people have that they just go along with it follow the crowd in other words but when they truly think about it they do feel the pain of another.

No, we're just more enlightened individuals. More evolved. Better, I dare say? :-X ;) Some people are ignorant and some people are just plain cruel. In this case of having to pay $100 to watch torture and pain inflicted, I'd lean towards cruel.
