Does anybody know what other places sell pets (dogs or cats)? I know about the animal shelters, I've been to craig's list. I can't think of anything else.

Check the want ads in your local paper for the "Free to Good Home" pets. PLEASE adopt a dog or cat that would otherwise end up being dumped, drowned or hit by a car. Sometimes by taking in a "free to good homer," you're avoiding that animal being taken to the local shelter, or simply dropped on the street.

Maybe you could look on bulletins boards where people place ads (like at the laundromat?) You could even place your own "Wanted:" ad

You can go to Petfinder.com and look at animals, rescues, shelters-- even narrowed down by breed, if you want-- in your local area.

There are lots of rescues you can find online as well. My vet's office has a board with dogs that are in need of adoption. Some times people leave their pets at the vet as well, if they cannot afford the care/treatment.

I know this sounds weird, but Wal-Mart. Some branches have a big book or bulletin board in the pets aisles exclusively for those wanting to either adopt or get their pet adopted.
I also remember that a Petsmart in a town I used to live in had cats and dogs for adoption; the animals were the shelters', Petsmart just housed them so they had a better chance of being sold. If you have one in your area, you could see if they do that.
Some pet supply stores have certain days where people can set up their animals up for adoption at the store. Most Petco branches do this one or two Saturdays a month.
Ask around at work or in your neighborhood, too - you never know when someone around you has to get rid of their animal.
Yes, PetCo and PetSmart both do adoptions through local rescues, which I think is fantastic (although where they get their rodents, etc. from is another story ::) ). Usually they will have cats in kennels there every day; they will do dog adoption events on the weekends because dogs are too difficult to care for in a pet store. Definitely check there.
