We are fostering with the intention of adopting, but we have to make sure he can get along with our cat first.
He seems like such a great dog! He spent the first 6 years of his life with an old man who just had a stroke and can't take care of him any longer.

My wild boys will sure be a change of lifestyle for him!

Our other dog died about 3.5 years ago. I really didn't think I would be ready this soon, but it just sort of happened and felt right. I wasn't even really thinking about it until he walked up my driveway on Friday!
He is a wirey haired Jack Russell Terrier. His name is Festus, after a character on Gunsmoke-we might change it to Festivus if we keep him. lol

haha, festivus...

ohhh he is beautiful.  I love the look of wiry jack russells, and Festus has gorgeous eyes!
I hope he gets along reeeaaallly well with your cat and can become a permanent part of th ant family : )

Aww, he's cute!  Festivus is a great name, just don't call him fetus.  :P

He is VERY sweet and a great dog so far. There are some interesting logistics at the moment....and I'm not sure I'm up to the task, but we will see if it gets easier.
I'm giving it a month to be sure!

Oh, don't give up on him...he's precious!  I grew up with a Jack Russell and they can be a pain, but its so worth it.  Congrats!

You know, you guys are making me feel like a bad person for getting a cat after less tan a month. :(

I still love Festivus though.

I regret this very much, but it is not working out. He seriously almost killed my cat last night. They were under my king sized bed and I couldn't get to them. It was bad. My cat then shit all over the place under my bed.

Also, he RUNS like the wind. Yesterday morning my son opened the door and he bolted out, which left me running up a mountain in my socks to try and catch him. He almost got away. I left my little boys unsupervised in the house, and I just can't be doing that. He WILL get out again. There is no doubt.

There is also a back story about some previous owners. We live in a small town and I am positive they will find out where he is (we didn't steal him-its a long story) but these people are a little crazy and I am paranoid every time I am outside with the dog or on a walk.

:(

I am calling the original owner today (not the previous owner who had him after that) and telling him its not going to work out.
It's so sad because he really is sweet and loving. Now is just not the time I guess.

Anyone want an awesome dog (someone with no cats, and has a very high fenced in yard?)

I'm sorry L2A, that sucks.  He'll hopefully find a good home soon.

(((L2A)))

I'm sorry it isn't working out.  It is still awesome that you were trying to adopt.  There will be another opportunity and doggie that you just fall in love with where it does work out.

L2A, I am so sorry for the stress I know this must be causing you... how is your kitty? I hope recovery is full & swift... Now & more past years than not, I've had both dogs & cats, and sometimes keeping both involves safety issues that just can't be ignored. We just took in a rescued highway-dog (our fourth- egads!), and serious anti-cat behavior would have definitely nixed the deal... luckily things seem to be going ok (this pup is kinda scared of our big bossy cat, which is just fine by me), but in your circumstances we would have absolutely made the same decision-- that issue can surely lead to some *serious* badness... even though maybe sometimes you can reshape behavior to some degree for some dogs, it's just about impossible (imo) to eliminate the pre-existing habit of trying to kill cats... at least, not to the extent that they're ever really safe together.

There are so many dogs in the world in need of a loving home, I'm sure there's one out there that will be a better 'fit' with your family, when all the stars line up for it properly... Kudos for being open to giving it a try, with a dog in need of adoption, and also for recognizing the limitations of what your family can realistically handle-- a lot of folks do neither. Hang in there... hopefully next time things will work out much much better!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support guys. I was feeling so badly and really hoping that I wouldn't get flamed for "giving up". There are just too many circumstances that make me uneasy.
He WILL get out again when one of my boys opens the door.
He WILL kill the cat if we don't keep them separated.
The self-titled Hillbillies who owned him temporarily before us will probably come after us with their shot guns.

The old man's son who gave him to me was SOOO nice and understanding and grateful that we gave it a try. He said not to worry and that they had some other options. He is probably coming in the morning to get him.

I'm SO glad we at least tried. It would have really bothered me if we did not and I always would have wondered what it would have been like. Now I know! :)

The dog was SUCH a good boy today. Just all snuggly and lovey-but we had the cat shut behind a door the whole day, so that was part of it.
We got some great pictures of him.
When my boys are older we might try again with a different, non-cat killing dog.

Thanks again guys!

ugh.
to top the night off, he (6 years old) just peed in my son's room on his carpet, even after a 20 minute walk where he did a bunch of peeing and pooped.
yeah, not gonna work.
