Kitten Adoption Questions

I have been thinking about adopting a kittie for a little while now, but I don't know too much about what a cat would need besides a litter box, food, and bowls.  I'll probably need some type of scratching device as I don't think I like the idea of declawing cats.  Does anyone have any useful suggestions or unknown problems they encountered?

I second Tanevab.  Kittens are great, but older cats can be wonderful, too.  If you get an older cat from a shelter, they will be fixed already.  Plus, you will be saving a life.
Although I didn't get him from a shelter, I adopted my big fluffy child when he was already an adult cat.  He couldn't be more loving and affectionate...except with the vet, whom he hates! hehe

Yes, I've thought about getting an adult cat, though I'll still call it a kittie, so long as it is cute, and I don't think I've seen a cat that isn't cute.  I just like the work kittie.  If there are more adult cats at the shelter, I'll probably get one.

Why just one?  The more the merrier!!    ;)    :D  ;)    :D

j/k  -  I think it's great you're adopting a kittie!!!    ;D

...Fancy feast cat food and iam's cat food are probally two of the best out there. ...

?????????

I second kbuettne recommendation for "the worlds best litter".  Swheat stuff is a close second.  You can try the garbage bag trick OR oil (yes oil, just like you'd oil a cake pan) the clean litter box before you put in the litter. "stuff" won't stick... oil the box every time you do the "BIG, dump out the old litter, scrub the box, refill with clean litter" clean.

Ooo, yes! The oil thing works like a charm! I was skeptical at first and thought it would gum up, but it's such an amazing trick--nothing sticks!

And I would recommend learning to trim their nails yourself.  I don't have cats (deathly allergic) but my friend does and she does it with no problem whatsoever.  I have no idea how. :(  I know she trained them from when they were little though.  Brilliant, I thought.  Saves the cost of a trip to the vet.  Didn't think you could do that.

Are you set on a kitten?

Because what I do is call all the shelters and ask if they have any declawed cats. Now, of course, I would NEVER declaw a cat myself. However, since some people are so misinformed that they do ... I like to reap the benefits of that.  ;)

I've heard people say that declawing damages a cat's personality, and they become mental afterwards. But, I've never noticed that to be true. I and my mom have only ever gotten the declawed cats from shelters. All have been friendly, sweet, and social ... in as much a cat can be "social." All my cats (and my mom's cats) have gone through the motions of sharpening their claws on furniture. Except ... they don't have claws.

Naturally, as I said, I do NOT support in any way shape or form declawing cats. I think humans who do this should be declawed themselves. But, since the cat in the shelter is declawed anyway ... my furniture will be safe.

Yes, check out yogaferret's link. Thanks to that discussion, I switched from regular messy, clay litter to an environmentally friendly, clean, natural pine litter called 'Enviro-Litter'. You hardly need any in the box & you can NOT ever smell a dirty litter box. When the pine gets wet, it breaks down & after scooping & flushing the solid waste, I can toss the pine in the yard.....nothing to throw in the trash :)
I think that thread also talked about good quality cat food too. Do a little homework & buy the best cat food that you can afford. I swear by 'Natural Balance' for our cat.
When you get your little bundle, how 'bout showing us some baby pictures? :)

I've still got to check with my landlord, or build a hideout, but when I do get a baby I'll be sure to post some pics =).  A friend told me yesterday that she uses fingernail clippers to clip her cats nails and they work better than a pair of specialty cat clippers that she bought, anybody find the same thing?

Yeah, the human clippers work soooo much better.
Even the store manager told us that.  We still bought the specialty..."guillotine" clippers at first butafter trying we switched to the human ones pretty fast.  I don't think I was even able to do one compete paw with the "speciality". :P

I don't think my kittie will have to worry about that, I'm full of it!

That's a good idea Pup.  I definitely want to window shop a bit before taking the plunge.  I also want to make sure to watch the kitties for a little bit to make sure they don't show any warning signs of poor treatment or anything else strange; I'm a pet psychologist, didn't you know?

She's awesome, but has a bit of a cold right now that was supposed to be over according to the pound.  She also likes Baypuppy better than me so far, but that will soon be fixed.
