Dogs - weight question
So I even visited the AKC site. I figured their so strict about these things, they MUST have something.
Nope. Nada.
So I thought some here might be able to shed some light on this problem I'm having.
What are the standard weight ranges for a MEDIUM, SMALL, and TOY sized dog?
The only info I have from 4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS is "Large dog can be considered equivalent to an average human (60 kg)".
So the LARGE category is 60 kg. But after that, nothing. And no way to figure it out. You'd think she'd be more specific, being a vet and all.
Anyone have any links or ideas?

Small - 4-11kg
Medium - 11-22kg
Large - 22-45kg

I so should have remembered to check those product sites. >:( (I don't use the products myself anymore so I don't have the boxes sitting around the apartment. Still I should have remembered.)
That makes more sense, in terms of weight, but I wondered where she picked the 60kg? Maybe in refering to rottweiler breeds? (that's more weight than I am!!)
I think I can still make those weights work together if I ....(zurasu, i can't think of a good English word)
move the values and 'words'.
Her base set value is a "large dog/cat" , 60kg gets a 10g dose.
Then she says a "medium sized dog/cat " gets 5 gm.
A "small sized dog/cat" gets 2.5 gm
If I just consider them as size 'categories' without attaching vague names to them I can combine your weight values and her values like this:
60+ kg (4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS)
22-45 kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #1)
11-22 kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #2)
4-11 kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #3)
up to 4kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #4)
And assign dosing values like this:
60+ kg = 10g (4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS recommended dose)
22-45 kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #1) = 5 g (4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS, recommended dose for medium size)
11-22 kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #2) = 2.5 g (4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS, recommended dose for small size)
4-11 kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #3) = 1.25 g (extra-small size dose, CALCULATED based on 4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS previous values)
up to 4kg (STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #4) = .5 g or 500 mg (extra-extra-small size dose, CALCULATED based on 4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS previous values)
Since ferrets fall in the category of 2kg and under.....
We often recommend using flea and tick meds like Frontline in the "kitten size"as a safe dosage. However, frontline and related products are applied to the skin/fur, not ingested. Probably ought to knock the dosage down again when working with ferrets just to be on the safe side. We can up the dose later if they tolerate the minimum well. (thinking out loud here....) Giving us yet another final category:
1kg to 2kg (Calculated based on STANDARD pharmaceutical dosing weight category #4) = .25 g or 250 mg (extra-extra-extra-small size dose, CALCULATED based on 4 PAWS 5 DIRECTIONS previous values)
Anything in this look weird or unsound to anyone?

Since I haven't heard back yet, does anyone else have these weights on their pets meds and can tell me the company/manufacturer?
We only work with FRONTLINE and ADVANTAGE and it's not showing up on those. :P

up to 22 lbs (Orange Box) toy/small
23-44 lbs (Blue Box) - small/med
45-88 lbs (Purple Box) - med/large
89-132 lbs (Red Box) -large/xtra large

I don't think I would ever consider a large dog to be "equivelent to a human". To me a rottweiler IS a large breed dog, but the average rottweiler is about 100lbs. A great pyrenees would be more like a giant breed, the average pyr being about 130lbs.

How's Shinsei doing?
Ever since they took over theferretstore.com, their selection has been nothing special so I stopped going there. BUT That is a nice pharmacy. I may look into switching over to them depending on how they ship in hot weather. About time they started adding flavorings for ferrets too.
The funny thing is (in a not so funny way), right off it has:
Health conditions that commonly affect ferrets
Adrenal disease
Insulinoma
Lymphoma
Cardiomyopathy
Why, he's got 3 out of those 4!! :o
And the medicines in "EXAMPLES OF MEDICATIONS THAT CAN BE COMPOUNDED"
5 out of 7 there. ???
Do we get a prize for having so many?
Right now he has good days and so-so days. Most of the nodes are no longer a hard mass,but "mushy" so that's good. We also got him started on Dave's glandulars (adrenal, lymph, and heart) and turmeric. I'll post the details on my blog for others to reference.
He's continuing the Essiac, but I worry that the levels are too low to be effective which is a common problem I have personally dealt with with western herbology. another reason I'm not such a big fan of it compared to Chinese.
However, another ferret owner treating with chinese medicine for the first time referred me to an online store where she gets her meds and I will consult with them.

I know its a lot of weight, BUT that is how she classifies them and she is a DVM with a holistic background....
So, that's where I'm having trouble dosing.
She's got 3 categories only, one starting way high off the charts.
The other common meds have more sensible ranges.
All together tho they are non-standard weight categories for dosing, and range widely.
Trying to mesh them all together in some uniform, safe way... :'( :o :'(

My friend's Mastiff was 160 pounds. I was sitting cross legged on the floor years ago and Cody walked between my legs. I thought she was going to keep going but she sat down on one of my thighs. Nothing like having a huge Mastiff face staring right in yours from about 6 inches away. Her head was bigger than mine! The next day, I had a huge bruise on my thigh!
I guess for heartworm, they would have to take a combination of two pills.

I love Mastiffs..
for the heartworm for the bigger dogs (one of my rottweilers was on the high end of things, 125lbs) and they recommended one of the 100lb heartworm pills PLUS one of the small dog ones. I never did that tho, it was just tooo much stuff.
