Can't keep my cats off the counter!

Anyone have any advice on how to keep cats from jumping up on the kitchen counter and table when I am not at home??  I think it is so digusting for my cats to be walking on the same counter I cook on!!  I have tried almost everything!  I love my cats but not when they are on the counters!! Thank you!

There is a product called a scat mat that you lay on a surface where you don't want your pet, and when they jump onto it they get a little electric pulse.  I think for a cat, that would only happen once or twice and they wouldn't do it again.  I know it's an issue for all cat owners..it's such a natural part of their instincts.  It doesn't bother some people.  I try to keep mine down, but I know there just walkin all over it when I'm out or sleeping!

Personally I just clean my counters before I put food on them.

they make some repellent sprays, but i don't know if they work. they're sold at pet supply stores.

Me too.  There really is no way to keep a cat off something a cat wants to get on.

When we were training our 2 to stay out of the crib we fit a piece of cardboard to the exact size of the crib and covered it completely with packing tape sticky side out. then we tossed a toy in there and waited till they jumped in.  One step on that tape was enough to learn they didn't want that on their paws.

I've lived with two cats for almost three years now.  I thought we had a rule of, "No cats allowed on the kitchen counter," but only recently did I discover that rule is, specifically, "No cats allowed on the kitchen counter when Laura's home."

Cats are jerks.  Just let them do what they want.  You're not in charge, and you need to come to terms with that.  It's humbling and degrading, but you get used to it.
